It’s often said in short track racing that you don’t know who has won until after everyone clears post-race tech inspection.

With the pole for the 48th annual Snowball Derby on the line, you can say the same for qualifying.

Ty Majeski inherited the pole position for Sunday’s asphalt Super Late Model race at the half-mile 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL after Christopher Bell’s car failed inspection after qualifying wrapped up Friday night.

Bell, piloting a Toyota for Kyle Busch Motorsports, had been fast throughout Thursday and Friday’s practice sessions. All odds put him as the favorite to lead the field to green for Sunday’s 300-lap race.

Bell didn’t disappoint, turning a lap in 13.027 seconds, smashing Chase Elliott’s qualifying record time of 16.133, set back in 2013.

But then came Bell’s trip through head tech man Ricky Brooks’ infamous “Room of Doom.”

Bell’s car, as well as that of defending race winner John Hunter Nemechek, failed to make it through unscathed, with both driver’s times being disallowed.

That moved Majeski to the pole, with Dawsonville, GA’s Elliott, the 2011 Snowball Derby winner, on the outside.

Bell will have to race his way into Sunday’s event through Saturday’s last chance qualifying race, while Nemechek, as the most recent winner of the race, will get in on a provisional.

Majeski comes into the weekend on a hot streak, having scored the win in the 50th annual Governor’s Cup 200 at New Smyrna Speedway on Nov. 15.

Preston Peltier qualified third fastest, with Dalton Sargeant fourth and Logan Boyett fifth.

Lawrenceville, GA’s Casey Roderick, who was the Super Late Model track champion at 5 Flags Speedway this year, was sixth fastest, with 2010 Snowball winner Johanna Long, Stephen Nasse, Dawsonville, GA’s Spencer Davis and Kaz Grala rounding out the top ten.

Other notable drivers locked into Sunday’s race includes NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Daniel Hemric in 11th, two-time Derby winner Augie Grill in 13th, NASCAR K&N East champion William Byron in 15th, Senoia, GA’s Bubba Pollard in 18th and Harrison Burton, whose team worked through the night to repair their car after it was heavily damaged in a practice crash in 24th.

Notables on the outside looking in include Christian Eckes, whose team also had to work to repair their car after a practice crash, in 31st, 2015 CARS Super Late Model champion Cole Timm in 40th and veteran Late Model driver Junior Niedecken in 55th.

In all, 58 cars took time in Friday’s qualifying. Of those, the top 30 are now locked into Sunday’s race. The remaining drivers will have to race their way in Saturday night in a 50 lap last chance race, with only four transferring on to Sunday’s race. With three provisionals for the most recent champion (John Hunter Nemechek), Southern Super Series champion (Casey Smith) and the highest qualifying track regular, the field of 37 starters will be set.

Action resumes at 5 Flags Speedway on Saturday, as the Pro Late Models step into the spotlight for the 30th running of the Allen Turner Snowflake 100. 28 drivers will also vie for the final starting spots on Sunday in the last chance qualifying race for the Snowball Derby. The Pro Truck division will also be in action.

Then on Sunday, all eyes will be on the Super Late Models, as a field of 37 drivers will look to add their name to the list of winners of the Tom Dawson trophy in the 48th annual Snowball Derby, with the green flag set to drop on 300 laps of action at 2 pm.
