Augie Grill has been tough to beat this year at Montgomery Motor Speedway in Montgomery, AL.
Saturday night was no different, as the Hayden, AL wheelman netted his third win of the season in the Show Me The Money Pro Late Model series feature during the track’s “Saturday of Speed.”
The night started with Jasper, GA’s Chandler Smith turning in the fastest time in qualifying to score the pole for the feature. The invert would move Smith to seventh, with Grill and Hunter Robbins moving to the front row.
Robbins jumped out to the early lead, with Robbins in tow. The first caution of the night flew when Warren Mobley and Branden Herbert spun in turn two. It would fly again on the restart, when Stacy Crane spun in turn four.
Back under green, Grill would continue to pace the field until lap 13, when Crane, Herbert and Wayne Shells tangled, bringing out the third caution of the night.
As the race progressed, two-time Daytona 500 winner Sterling Marlin moved his way into fourth, while Bret Holmes moved to challenge for the lead. Holmes strong run was derailed when a tangle with Kyle Plott sent him spinning, bringing out the caution.
Meanwhile, Grill powered on to the victory, with Luke Christain in second, Plott in third, Marlin in fourth and Bobby Knox, Jr. in fifth.
Flowery Branch, GA’s Fredrick Moore, Daniel Bolden, Darin Cronin, Dennis Reno, Jr. and Holmes rounded out the top ten. Holmes 10th place finish was enough to secure the 2015 Show me the Money Pro Late model championship.
In other action, Jeff Letson powered to the early lead in the Modifieds Of Mayhem feature over Billy Melvin. Letson would hold the lead until contact with Melvin sent Melvin around in front of the pack, leaving Ty Roberts with nowhere to go. Both cars had to go to the pits for repairs.
On the restart, Ryan Paul moved into second, and hounded Letson for the top spot. In the end, it was Letson taking the win, with Paul in second, Donnie Hamrac in third, Jason Huffmaster in fourth and Mike Maddox in fifth.
The Street Stock feature went caution free, with Joe Bethea, Jr. scoring the victory, with David Wood, Charles David, Gary Davis and Josh Wilson rounding out the top five.
Montgomery Motor Speedway will be back in action Saturday, August 29, featuring the Modified Minis, the Interstate Batteries Late Model Sportsman and the Street Stocks.
