Riley Hickman took the lead on the opening lap, and led the entire distance to score the win in Saturday night’s Michael Head, Jr. Memorial for the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL.
Hickman picked up the $4,000 winner’s payday, and was joined in victory lane by Michael Head, Jr.’s father, Georgia Racing Hall of Fame member Mike Head.
Lucas Burns and Jason Hiett set fast time in each of their groups, putting them on the front row for the start of the feature.
When the green flag dropped, Burns and Hiett led the field into the first turn, with Hickman diving under both drivers to sweep into the lead. Behind him, Hiett moved to second, and worked to run down Hickman.
Hiett would close on Hickman twice, but could not find a way around the leader.
A restart with eight laps to go gave the field one more shot at Hickman, with Randy Weaver moving up to challenge. But Hickman was up to the task, driving away to score the win.
Weaver finished in second, with Hiett in third, Tom Maddox in fourth and Eric Cooley in fifth.
Tim Busha, Todd Morrow, Jake Knowles, Oliver Gentry and Jason Wilson rounded out the top ten.
The Southern All Star Series returns to action on Saturday, Aug. 1, for the Stick Elliott Memorial at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC.
