The battle for a division points championship has started to come into focus on the quarter-mile “Thunder Ring” following week six action of Thursday Thunder at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, GA. In addition, drivers battled for a spot in the INEX National Championship as week six served as an INEX regional qualifier.

Christopher Clanton was the beneficiary of a late race caution that helped him claim his second win of the season in the Allred Family Dentistry Semi-Pro/Young Lions division.

“We had a good car all day,” when asked about earning the win following the race. “We started in the back and made our way up to the front with the shuffle in the restart. I don’t know what happened there, I think they touched or something. I got to the lead and a caution came out.”

The caution pushed Jensen Jorgensen, William Martin and Dylan Murry to the back of the field which allowed Clanton to restart on the inside of the front row.

“I was just holding my breath for the last three laps,” said Clanton as he held off Jordan Coker, last week’s winner, and Brandon Brock over the final three laps for the win. Despite a fourth place finish, Martin retained the top spot in the division standings with two races remaining in the points season.

Bill Plemons, Jr. earned the win in the Master’s feature from the pole. Plemons was challenged throughout the race by Tina Johnson, Don Maness and Robbie Woodall, who was substituting for Scott Moseley, throughout the race. Plemons overcame a half a dozen restarts over the first 13 laps and then opened up an four car length lead over the final seven laps to capture the checkered flag. Johnson maintained her division points lead with her second place finish while Plemons moved up a spot in the point standing into second with the victory.

D.J. Canipe again outran the field in the Bandits feature race to earn his fourth win at the Thunder Ring this season. Will Robusto finished third to move into sole possession of second in the division point standings. Canipe held off Robusto following a late restart and drove away from the field to claim the checkered flag and increase his lead in the division point standings.

The Xtreme Fun on Wheels Outlaw division continues to be dominated by Ashton Higgins as he claimed his fifth win of the season. Higgins controlled the race from the pole to add to his point lead. Connor Younginer finished second as he battled Ricky Springer over the final four laps. The pair flip-flopped position at each end of the track before Younginger edged out Springer as they raced to the stripe.

Newcomer Tyler Chapman earned his first win at the Thunder Ring in the Beginner Bandolero feature. Tyler Chapman drove around Jason Chapman early in the race and then held off the field on subsequent restarts following a handful of cautions to earn the victory. Ryan Younginer finshed second while Jason Chapman was third.

Just two races remain for drivers to make a move in the battle for a division championship. Drivers return to the “Thunder Ring” for week seven action on July 16 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Thursday Thunder features five racing divisions, including Bandolero cars in the Beginner Bandits, Bandits, and Xtreme Fun on Wheels Outlaw divisions and Legends cars in the Allred Family Dentistry Semi-Pro/Young Lions and Masters/Pro divisions. The summer racing series hits the quarter-mile “Thunder Ring” at Atlanta Motor Speedway each Thursday through July 23, as drivers of all ages and skill levels compete in the 18th season of quarter-mile racing at AMS.
