The passion was apparent on the track in Week 8 of O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags at Atlanta Motor Speedway as the intensity of the drivers ratcheted up on the pit lane drag strip.
Bobby Daniel of Stockbridge, GA, behind the wheel of the 1995 Chevrolet Lumina “Batmobile”, earned his first win of the season in the Harbins Mechanical Services Super Pro Division.
“It left hard, it left real good,” said Daniel when talking about his final win over the American Dragster driven by Robert Chaney. Daniel hooked up at the line and used a quick jump to outrun Chaney for the win.
“I’m finally getting the car tuned in and it’s going good and straight and leaving hard,” said Daniel. “I’ve been kinda struggling down here all year, but tonight wasn’t like that. I’ve had transmission problems and other problems but now everything has been straightened out and she’s going good.”
“She’s going to be hard to reckon with now,” said Daniel after the win as he looks towards the remainder of the season in the Harbins Mechanical Services Super Pro division.
One of the most hotly contested divisions throughout the night was captured by Robby Blankenship in a 1989 Ford Mustang in Street Outlaw. Other notable winners included Kelly in his 1968 Ford Mustang as he earned his second win of the season in the Harding Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Domestic class. The Atlanta Journal Constitution Pro Division saw David Clevenger notch his fourth consecutive win of the points season.
Chris Wolfenbarger summed up the night best following his win in the Thunder Tower West Harley-Davidson Cruise/Dirt Motorcycle Division, “It’s all about fun.”
“I came out here and broke the truck (he is also competing in the truck division with a 1957 Chevrolet 3100), so I figured I had to win in something. I had to give it all I had on the bike.”
Four points races into the championship chase and the O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags has produced some thrilling action on the track.
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags continues with Week 9 on Friday, June 26. More information can be found at AtlantaMotorSpeedway.com/Drags.
