Race fans got their money’s worth Saturday night at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA, as 19-year-old Austin Horton beat 17-year-old Joey Armistead to the finish line by less than three feet to score the “Summer Sizzler” Limited Late Model victory.
“That was a great race,” said Horton in victory. “Joey raced me good, but we just had a little more at the end. I have to thank everyone including Rucker Orr for letting me race his car. Thanks.”
Horton, of Grantville, GA, qualified the fastest to snare the pole position for the Limited Late Model feature and he shot out to the lead at the drop of the green. Armistead started on the outside, but slid up the track into the loose dirt and faded back to fifth in turn three. Tod Darda jumped on the opportunity and grabbed second ahead of Dennis Hale and Glenn Morris. The action was intense throughout the field as Carey Smith began his climb, running three wide with Mason Massey and Clint ‘Cat Daddy’ Smith.
Armistead fought back through the middle part of the race to make his way back to second place. He worked to hold the low line while Horton ran the top side of the track. The final three laps of the race saw Horton nose in front and then Armistead would inch back in front of him. The duo would come to the flag stand in a near dead heat when the white flag flew.
They remained locked in a side-by-side race through the entire last lap with Horton beating Armistead at the line by half a fender to score the $1,500 victory. Clint Smith would make a final dash to snare a third place finish with Carey Smith in fourth and Dennis Hale in fifth.
Darda, Clifton Moran, Michael Brewer, Glenn Morris and Jamie Maurice rounded out the top ten.
In other action, Joe Armistead, Jr., followed in his son’s footsteps as he raced side by side with Austin Smith for the lead in the Super Late Model feature. They would run several laps in a heated battle before Austin Smith’s ride slowed with mechanical issues. Armistead would then set sail for victory lane and his third win of the season. Scott Groves would settle for second, with Clint Smith finishing in third. Forty-year veteran Ricky Williams finished in fourth ahead of rookie Ashton Winger.
Curtis Cline led flag to flag for the Crate Late Model feature victory ahead of Cord Dodgen in second and Zach Shelton in third. Ted Minnix was fourth and division points leader Bobby Mills finished in fifth.
Wesley Scott made it to victory lane in his first time racing at Senoia Raceway. Scott overtook Ben Wells early in the Hobby Stock feature after Wells’ car developed steering issues. Wells continued to try and get past Scott despite battling a broken suspension that was evident with his left front wheel aiming towards the interior concrete. Wells tried valiantly, but had to settle for second ahead of Chad Foster in third, Jerry Scott in fourth and Scott Sherrer in fifth.
Michael Courtney led every lap of the Four Cylinder feature en route to the victory. Mark Newton ran second after working past James Stansel, who finished in third. Bo Chambers and Jamie Nicholson rounded out the top five.
Courtney ran the track in preparation for the Kajun Mini Stock Association visit to the track in July.
“This track is great,” said Courtney afterwards. “I am looking forward to coming back next month.”
A wild roll-over in the Legends Car feature hushed the crowd, as John Ponzio clipped the back stretch wall before getting upside down and trolling end over twice before landing on his wheels at the entrance to turn three. Ponzio was uninjured.
Meanwhile, Robby Woodall outdistanced Zach Leonhardi for the feature victory, with Dwight Pilgram in third, Bubba Harry in fourth and Will Martin in fifth.
Parrish Duncan won the caution-filled B Cadet feature. Brandon Bright finished second ahead of Wesley Lyle, with Andrew Moody in fourth and Brian Womack fifth.
Paul Walters went flag to flag for the Bomber win. Shane Tizwell, Josh Roddy, Alex Rudolph Jim Jackson rounded out the top five.
The racing action continues at Senoia Raceway on Saturday, June 20 with racing in the Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Crate Late Models, B Cadets, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Bombers and Legends divisions.
