Derek Hagar, from Marion, AR held off Tim Crawley on a green-white-checkered finish Saturday night at the Tennessee National Raceway in Hohenwald, TN to collect the win in the USCS Sprint Car Series Spring Speed Xplosion 2015 A-main.
The win was Hagar’s 31st-career USCS victory, his third win at TNR and his second series win of the 2015 season.
“Glad to have this checkered flag,” Hagar said in victory lane. “I didn’t really know who was behind me, but I knew I had to keep pushing once I got by Morgan (Turpen) in lapped traffic. It was the only way we were going to get the win. I love this place, and that’s three years in a row we’ve won here at Hohenwald, so it’s pretty special.”
The deciding two-lap dash was set up when Justin Webb flipped in turn one while running seventh, just as Hagar was coming to the checkered flag. The red lights illuminated just before Hagar crossed the line, meaning he had to reset and hold on one more time.
“I thought it was over,” Hagar admitted. “All I saw was the checkered flag, and then I saw the red lights when I was letting off to go into turn one. They came over the Raceceiver and said we were going to have a green-white-checkered and I thought, ‘I have to do this again? But, it all worked out – we hung on and I’m happy about that.”
Crawley came home in the runner-up position, disappointed despite a seemingly-solid night for his Mike Ward Racing team.
“We just didn’t have the speed to contend for the win tonight,” Crawley admitted. “It’s as simple as that. I made a mistake on the start and went to the top lane, and it cost us a couple of spots. From there it was just gaining back what I lost at the beginning.”
K&N Filters polesitter Morgan Turpen rounded out the podium in third place after leading the first 14 laps before Hagar got by in lapped traffic. Her teammate, Terry Gray, finished fourth and Marshall Skinner rounded out the top five.
The race was slowed by five incidents. The first occurred at lap four when outside polesitter Taylor Tidmore smacked the turn one wall after a broken suspension piece sent him spinning. The second came at lap seven for a spin in turn one by Don Goodwin. The race was slowed for a third time on lap 18, when Nick Snyder looped his car in turn two. The fourth break in the action occured at lap 26 when Anthony Nicholson made contact with Eddie Gallagher coming off turn two, spinning Gallagher around. The final caution and red flag came on lap 29 for Webb’s flip.
Marshall Skinner kicked off the evening’s racing action by winning the Hoosier Tire Speed Dash, his first dash victory of the season. Hagar scored the win in the first heat, while Crawley rolled to the victory in the second heat.
Hagar was the provisional polesitter after scoring the most passing points in heat race action, but after a six was rolled on the K&N Inversion Die, Turpen received the K&N Filters Pole Award.
The United Sprint Car Series filtercharged by K&N continues their 2015 schedule on Saturday, June 20 with the re-scheduled USCS Sprint Speedweek Round Two event at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS.
