Billy Melvin topped the Modified field on Saturday night, as he scored the win in the Modifieds of Mayhem feature at Montgomery Motor Speedway in Montgomery, AL.
Melvin jumped out to the early lead, and would set the pace until the action was slowed by the first caution of the night, brought out when Troy Grey went around in turn four.
Back under green, Melvin continued to lead with Jeff Letson pressuring him from the second position. The two battled until the caution flew again for a spin by Johnny Brazier.
A multi-car crash in turn three sent two cars to the pits with heavy damage, and brought out the red flag to allow for clean up.
Back under green, Melvin continued to dominate the event, as he crossed the finish line first to pick up the win. Letson finished in second, with Donnie Hamrac in third, Brazier in fourth and Ryan Paul in fifth.
Troy Grey, Ryan Redmon, Ty Roberts, Rocky Rogers and Butch Wade rounded out the top ten.
In other action, Shelby Rouse and Larry Speakman brought the Interstate Batteries Late Model Sportsman feature to the green flag, but it didn’t take long for defending division champion Justin Caton to power his way to the front. Caton paced the field, with Brad Edwards and Joe Hudson battling for second. Hudson moved to second on lap seven, and worked to reel in the leader. But there was no catching Caton, as he went on to score the victory. Hudson finished in second, with Jason Furrow in third, Speakman in fourth and Reuse in fifth.
Joe Wingard from Morrow, GA led the Modified Mini feature down to the green, but would see Joel Collier power by on the opening lap to take the early lead. While Wingard paced the race, Nick Doehring saw his night come to an end with a mechanical failure. Under the resulting caution, Joel Collier and Rusty Alverson got into an on-track dispute, resulting in front end damage to Collier’s car that ended his night.
Back under green, Steve Looney moved to the lead, with Alverson giving chase. Looney went on to pick up the victory, with Alverson finishing in second and Wingard in third.
Brian “Bubba” Hutchinson and Charles Davis led the Street Stocks field to green, with Davis moving into the early lead. Dwayne Wesenberg moved into the fight for the top spot, which soon saw the leaders racing three wide. Contact between Wesenberg and Joe Bethea, Jr. sent Wesenberg into the inside retaining wall.
On the restart, Bethea, Jr. moved to the front, and would go on to score the victory. Chance Atkins finished in second, with David Wood in third and Davis in fourth.
Montgomery Motor Speedway will be back in action on June 20, as the Southern Super Series Super Late Model Tour rolls into MMS for the Rumble by the River 100. The Interstate Batteries Late Model Sportsman, Street Stocks and Modified Minis will also be competing.
