David Roberts held off Chad McCumbee to score an emotional victory in Saturday night’s Late Model Stock feature at Greenville Pickens Speedway in Easley, SC.
Roberts passed Rodney Howard just 15 laps in to take the point. From there Roberts, had to contend with McCumbee, who had traveled all the way from Ocean Isle, North Carolina to compete. McCumbee was able to almost run Roberts down, but could only get within a car length at the end, as Roberts took the win.
“I want to dedicate this race to my good friend and fan, Jamie Mabery. He has recently been given some very bad news by physicians,” Roberts said. “Jamie has a long tough road ahead of him, but we are asking everyone to please add Jamie to your prayer requests. I am dedicating this victory to Jamie.”
“I knew my car was losing a little speed, so I just kept taking it easy which allowed McCumbee to close the gap. I was being cautious and knew exactly where he was the entire race.”
Trey Gibson finished in third, with Bob Root in fourth and Tasha Porter Kummer in fifth.
In other action, Jack Hooper took the unofficial victory in the 4-Cylinder race, and was also emotional in Victory Lane. Michael Cross finished in second, with Joshua Thomasen in third, Don Tavernia in fourth and Sandra Tavernia in fifth.
In the Renegade feature, Brad Burns had to start in the rear due to his victory in the last race. Burns quickly worked his way to first in just a few laps and went on to pick up the win. Bobby Emory was second, Parker Jameson was third, with Shane Hill fourth and Larry Nabors finishing fifth.
