Kres VanDyke added to his undefeated season at Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, VA on Saturday by sweepting the Twin 35-lap Late Model Stock features to bring his season win total to six.

VanDyke qualified on pole with a fast time of 16.563. On the opening lap of the first feature, VanDyke would take the point, and would hold a comfortable lead as the race neared the 10-to-go point. That ended when feature’s only caution waved on lap 26 for debris in turn three.

Back under green, VanDyke would again go to the lead and never look back for the win. Lance Gatlin finished in second, with Kyle Barnes in third, Wayne Hale in fourth and Jenna Wagner in fifth.

Wayne Hale was placed on point after an invert of four positions for the night’s second Late Model Stock race. Kyle Barnes would show strength early, pulling to the lead on the opening lap. The race’s first caution would wave on lap two when contact between Mardy Roberts and Steve Deskins sent Roberts around.

On the restart, Barnes would again pull to the lead as VanDyke moved to the second position. VanDyke would roll his machine hard into turns one and two on lap four, taking the lead on the exit of the corner. From there, VanDyke would pull away and go on to gain his sixth win of the season.

Gatlin, Barnes, Wayne Hale and Greg Bohannon rounded out the top five.

The victories were emotional for the 2014 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Tennessee State champion, as VanDyke had lost his grandfather earlier in the week.

“He used to always tell me to ‘go get ‘em’,” VanDyke said on his grandfather. “This one’s for you, papaw.”

John Harrell qualified on point for the 30-lap Modified Street race, and would take the lead on lap one, but the caution would wave on lap one for a spin on the backstretch. Harrell would regain the lead on the restart.

Nearing the end of the race, Mitch Gibson would begin to show strength, making his way into second place. But Gibson’s run would not be enough as Harrell claimed his first victory of the season at Lonesome Pine. Jamie Meadows finished in third, with Rob Austin in fourth and Jared Broadbent in fifth.

Joshua Gobble and Billy Duty would battle to kick off the Mod 4 feature. Gobble’s car would slow exiting turn four and come to a stop at the end of the front stretch, bringing out the yellow flag on lap three.

Rocky Yates would take the lead on the restart, holding the point until the caution flew again on lap 10 as Gobble once again stalled on the speedway. Yates would once again pull to the lead on the restart, and moved away for the win. David Brown finished in second, with Duty in third, Yates in fourth and Gobble in fifth.

After two failed attempts to get green flag racing underway, Jackie Jackson would pull to the lead in the Pure 4 feature. Coming to five laps remaining, Tom Hodges would begin to gain on Jackson. The caution would wave on lap 21 for a spin, setting up a four lap dash to the finish. Hodges would make the outside lane work on the restart, and pulled to the lead over Jackson. Hodges would drive on for the victory, with Jackson, Dan Hall, Darrell Hayes and B.J. Large rounding out the top five.

In the Rookie Pure 4 feature, Michael Nelson won the close dash to the finish over William Hale. Nelson crossed the line only 0.004 seconds over Hale. William Jones finished third, with Dalton Thomas in fourth.

Lonesome Pine Raceway will return to action on Saturday, May 30 for the fourth race of the season. For information, visit ThePineRaceway.com.
