Brandon Fox found himself out front on the final restart of Saturday night’s Late Model Stock feature at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Easley, SC, and he made the most of it.
He quickly jumped to the lead, and drove away to score his first career Late Model feature over Tasha Porter Kummer.
“I really didn’t feel much pressure in this race,” said Fox. “During the last practice, my spotter reminded me of some marks for getting in and through turns one and two, and suddenly everything clicked. When (David) Roberts decided to stay on the inside, I knew the only way he could win, was to be able to get down inside of me. He just couldn’t do it on the outside.”
Kummer commanded the first half of the 100 lap feature, and, had the race run a regular length as opposed to a longer special event, she would have won by 15 car lengths.
“My car was loose to start with,” she said after the race. “I knew it was loose, but we were also pretty happy with it.”
Instead of tightening it up, she and her crew left it just as it was and she adjusted her driving style.
“When it got to the point where I had to, I just had to back off. I dropped back to sixth, and really I was happy with the way it raced.”
But the race wasn’t over, and neither was the drama. A couple of late cautions bunched up the field, setting up a green-white-checkered finish after a hard-charging Dylan Hall tangled with a lapped car while battling Fox for the top spot.
Fox chose the inside line for the restart, with Roberts, the division points leader deciding to take the inside line behind Fox. That moved Kummer to the outside of the front row for the restart.
“I figured David would pick the inside,” Fox said. “I didn’t think he had the combination of power and handling to be able to pass me on the outside, so his best chance was if I left room for him to get down on my inside.”
Fox drove away on the restart. Kummer ducked to the bottom, between Fox and Roberts and held on for second place.
“When I was leading, at half-way, something started happening to my engine,” Kummer said afterwards. “I felt like I was in a very good spot. Just a couple of laps, and one position away from winning my first race.”
On the final restart, Kummer stomped on the accelerator and was rewarded by a sudden lack of power.
“I figured I had a valve lifter problem, but in those last two laps, my engine swallowed a valve and I was just hanging on. If the race had been one lap longer, I wouldn’t have been anywhere near the front. That was my best finish ever.”
“I guess I have run about 50 races, in all” Fox said. “With dad being the promoter now, instead of a driver, I am limited to racing only in the long races. This was an agreement voted on by the other drivers at the pre-season LMSC rules meeting. But, by showing I can be a race-winning driver, maybe I will have a chance to do a bit of traveling and get to race somewhere else while Dad promotes Greenville-Pickens.”
Roberts had to settle for third, with Dylan Hall in fourth and Justin Carroll in fifth.
Camden Francis, Rodney Howard, Andrew Cordell, Bob Root and Dale Dove rounded out the top ten.
In the Super Renegade 20-lap main event, Tim Sams made it five straight wins, with Ricky Stephens finishing second and Josh Sams was third. Stanley Pressley was fourth, and Tim Crowe, despite the pain of a fractured leg due to a racing accident just a few weeks back, took fifth.
Spencer Darnell captured his first victory in the Pure Street Stock feature, with Chris Meinders taking second. Jimbo Mann was third follwed by Buck Simmons in fourth, with Freddy Hale, Jr. in fifth.
The Renegade division saw the largest car count of the year with 19 racers on track. After setting quick time in practice, Brad Burns had to start sixth after the dice was rolled for inversion. Burns was able to overcome the inversion to end up in victory lane. Shane Hill was second, with Bobby Emory in third, Parker Jameson in fourth and Blake Gregory in fifth.
Brian King, last year’s runner-up in the NASCAR Division V National Points, claimed the victory in the Front Wheel Drive 4-Cylinder feature over Jack Hooper. Chris Francis was third, followed by Don Tavernia in fourth and Michael Cross in fifth.
Greenville Pickens Speedway is back in action on Saturday, April 18, with the Late Model Stock, Super Renegades, Pure Street Stocks, Renegades, and FWD 4-Cylinder divisions slated to compete.
