NASCAR’s future was on full display Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
Christopher Bell, 20, won his first NASCAR Super Late Model race, pulling away from 14-year-old Harrison Burton to take the Bruce Gowland Memorial 100. And Zane Smith, 15, finished fourth to claim the week-long championship in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track’s 49th Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
“It’s really special to me,” said Bell, who raced three times at the World Series for Kyle Busch Motorsports. “When we came down here, we didn’t know what to expect. We thought we’d have a pretty good car, but it’s so tough. These guys have been running all week long. But we were able to get going really good right off the bat.
“I didn’t qualify really well all three nights, but we were able to come away with this 100 lapper.”
The Norman, Oklahoma, driver won 24 times last year in open-wheel Midget competition.
Bell started 10th and moved to the front quickly. He followed in Burton’s tracks for most of the night before making his move on lap 80. He weathered two cautions and pulled away from Burton in the closing laps. Dawsonville, GA’s Spencer Davis finished in third, with Smith in fourth and Garrett Jones in fifth.
“I knew we had a really good hot rod, I just had to take care of it,” Bell said. “One hundred laps is a long time. Whenever I got behind him, I was just kind of riding. I knew I had a really good car. I was just trying to learn where I had to make my move. And then we got late in the race and I started to pressure him more and more.”
Bell finished fourth Friday and second to David Garbo, Jr. on Thursday.
Burton, the son of former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver, was going for his third win of the week.
“We got a bit snug in the center and that played into his hands really good,” Burton said. “He could roll the center way better than us. We kinda beat him a little bit up off. I had a lot of fun racing and his car was really, really quick and so was ours, so it made it a really good race. Once he got passed us, he kind of drove away a little bit.”
Smith took the title by three points over Garrett Jones. Steve Wallace, the son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace, was third and Burton fourth.
“I can’t thank the guy enough,” said Burton. “They worked hard every day throughout the week. This week has been a lot of fun, I’m glad we finished on a high note.”
Smith, from Huntington Beach, California, won once — the first of two 35-lap features that were run Wednesday — and claimed the big prize with his consistency of the seven races. His average finish was 5.8.
“We’re probably the happiest guys out here,” said Smith. “We didn’t expect to win and to win the championship is even bigger. I have the best team out here.”
Tyler Thomas won the Pro Late Model Division finale, a 35-lap feature, after initial winner Michael Lira was disqualified in post-race technical inspection for a weight infraction. Dalton Armstrong, who finished second, won the championship. Spencer Davis, pulling double duty in the Super Late Models, was third, with Derek Scott, Jr. in fourth and Austin Nason fifth.
The Florida Modified division also concluded Saturday, with Doug Moff winning the race. Tank Tucker finished in second. Tim Moore was third, giving him the title. Kevyn Terry finished fourth with Ricky Moxley in fifth.
Brandon Morris won the 50 lap Sportsman feature, with Sean Bass, Aaron Williamson, Robert Kuhn and Shane Hellimell rounding out the top five.
