It took all night and 35 eventful laps, but Steve Wallace ended up in Victory Lane.
The 27-year-old son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace drove a dented and torn-up Super Late Model to the win in the final feature of Wednesday night’s World Series Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing action at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
Wallace emerged from a battle with Harrison Burton, 14, to take the lead in the closing stages. Burton, the son of former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jeff Burton, was penalized for contact with Wallace on lap 32 while battling for first.
“It’s just short track racing here,” said Wallace, who won once last year en route to taking the 2014 World Series title. “We’ve been working on these cars all winter to get down here. I love Harrison and Jeff Burton. I just saw a hole and I had to go. I worked too damn hard to not go in there and rough a guy up to win.
“The car’s a little banged up. But hell we got plenty of Jet equipment to fix all the body work.”
Per track rules, Wallace got his spot back after being spun. Despite the heavy damage – which caused sparks as he went through the turns – he was able to pull away from Moore.
Burton wasn’t the only one who tangled with Wallace. Hunter Robbins was disqualified after throwing his steering wheel at Wallace’s car following an earlier race incident.
Wallace shook it all off in Victory Lane.
“I got into one guy,” Wallace said, “He got pissed and threw his steering wheel at me and knocked the whole mirror out of my car. Then Harrison retaliated on me and spun me out and I got hit in the door and blew the whole body part out. When the mirror came in, it blew the master power switch out of my car. So I had to race on one hand to keep that going.
“I did everything I could to pretty much finish the race. We came out with a win and some great points for us. It’s an awesome feeling, I’m really excited.”
Ryan Moore finished second, followed by Garrett Jones, Ty Majeski and David Garbo, Jr.
Natalie Decker, who will drive a Late Model for the NASCAR Drive for Diversity and Rev Racing this season, finished sixth.
He was the second Wallace to take the checkered flag on the evening. Earlier, 19-year-old Matt Wallace — son of NASCAR national series driver Mike Wallace — won a 35-lap Pro Late Model feature. Tim Sargent, Ryan Miles, Austin Nason and Derek Scott, Jr. rounded out the top five.
Because rain washed out Tuesday’s card, the track moved the events to Wednesday. That meant the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model and Pro Late Model divisions each ran twin 35-lap features.
Zane Smith won the first Super Late Model feature over Moore and Harrison Burton. Joey Mucciacciaro and Stepehen Nasse, while Wallace finished sixth.
Dalton Armstrong won the first Pro Late Model race, the first asphalt Late Model win for the open-wheel dirt star from Indiana. Miles finished second, with Tim Sargent third, Dawsonville, GA’s Spencer Davis in fourth and Matt Wallace in fifth.
NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour regular Eric Goodale snapped Ryan Preece’s two-race win streak when he slide past him on turn 3 with three laps to go to win the John Blewett III Memorial 76. Justin Bonsignore finished second, with Preece in third, J.R. Bertuccio, Jr. fourth and Chuck Hossfeld fifth.
Alan Bruns won the track’s 75-lap Florida Modified feature, with Kevyn Terry, Jimmy Britts, Jeremy Gerstner, and Matt Wheeler rounding out the top five.
Eddie MacDonald closed out the American-Canadian Tour’s visit with his third 100-lap win in as many tries. Wayne Helliwell, Jr. followed in second, with Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. third, Bradley Babb fourth and Alex LabbÈ in fifth.
Action returns to New Smyrna Speedway on Thursday night, with 50 lap features for both the Super Late Models and Pro Late Models, along with features for the Tour Type Modifieds and IMCA Modifieds.
