Ryan Preece continued his dominance at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL. Monday night.
The 24-year-old from Berlin, CT, picked up his second Tour-type Modified win at the 49th Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing in the 35-lap feature.
“It didn’t take long, apparently,” said Preece of the 16-minute feature that went caution free. “The car was really good and stayed pretty consistent throughout the run, and I’m really happy with it. We have a car that can win in the next two nights, too.”
The Modifieds will finish the week out with a pair of extra-distance races: The John Blewett III Memorial 76 on Thursday and the Richie Evans Memorial 100 on Friday.
“We tried something tonight as far as forward drive to keep it in it for longer,” Preece said. “And it seemed like it helped it, so I think we have a good game plan and we’ll see if we can execute it.”
Justin Bonsignore, who is expected to join Preece among others as NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship contenders in the upcoming season, was second.
“We’ve got some homework to do,” said Bonsignore. “We’ve been trying a lot of different things all week and this is the best we’ve got it. He’s still in a league of his own, but we’re finally getting in a step in the right direction.”
Bonsignore won twice at the World Series last year, including the week-ending Richie Evans 100.
“We had a little bit of an advantage last year, but everybody seems to have caught on,” Bonsginore said.
Chuck Hossfeld, JR Bertuccio, Jr. and Jimmy Zacharias rounded out the top five. Kevin Goodale finished sixth, followed by Eric Goodale, Spencer Davis, Cole Powell and Al Ermmarino.
It was actually the third time Preece crossed the finish line first at the World Series. The 2013 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion was disqualified from his opening night win in post-race technical inspection last Friday for a weight infraction. But he bounced back with a vengeance Saturday and continued his torrid World Series with a near shutout Monday.
Preece started third and was in the lead by lap 2.
Travis Eddy won the 35-lap Florida Modified feature over runner-up Kevyn Terry and Tim Moore, while Eddie MacDonald beat out Wayne Helliwell, Jr. and Alex LabbÈ for the American-Canadian Late Model Tour feature victory.
Racing at New Smyrna will continue Wednesday night, highlighted by a 35-lap Super Late Model feature — the track’s Division I in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series — and a 100-lap race for the visiting American-Canadian Tour.
