Matt Kurtz led from the drop of the green flag, and powered away to score the Eagle Jet Top Gun Sprints feature win in Saturday night’s Winternationals 2015 action at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL.
Meanwhile, Nick Hoffman scored his second Open Wheel Modified feature victory.
In Top Gun Sprints action, A.J. Maddox and Kurtz started on the front row with Kurtz taking the lead on the first lap until a three car incident drew the first and only caution of the race.
By the halfway point, Kurtz had opened up his lead over second place Danny Martin, Jr. by a two second advantage while methodically making his way thru the lapped traffic.
When the checkered flag waved, Kurtz scored his first win at East Bay Raceway Park.
“We had a very fast car last night but made a mistake by hitting the cone and never realized I did but a rule is a rule,” he said in victory lane. “I lost my dad back on January 15 and he always said he wanted me to win at East Bay and I’m sure he was looking down with a smile.”
Kurtz also won the Jeff Barfield Memorial Clean Sweep Award picking up an extra $400 along with the $1,000 to win.
Martin, Jr., Mark Ruel, Jr., Maddox and Sport Allen rounded out the top five.
In Open Wheel Modified action, Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, NC picked up his second straight Winternationals victory, giving him a total of $6,500, including the $5,000 prize and trophy for Saturday night’s 75-lap finale.
After starting seventh in the feature, with pole sitter Devin Gilpin clearly in charge, Hoffman was up to third by the time the caution flag flew on lap 17. He advanced to second on a restart on lap 31 where he stayed until the mandatory fuel stop on lap 44.
“I noticed that I had way more rubber on my tires than anyone else, and I just had to keep my car straight and get to the bottom soon,” Hoffman said following the win.
That move to the bottom groove came on lap 58 when he took the lead Gilpin and from there on he pulled away, winning by a margin of victory of 3.700 seconds over fourth starter Kyle Bronson. Gilpin held on for third.
“My dad will have to do a refresh on this Pro Motor Engine after my celebration on the track,” Hoffman said. “We already have this car sold, so I have to get back to the shop and build some more cars.” Hoffman.
Brad DeYoung and Kevin Adams rounded out the top five.
Winternationals 2015 action continues Feb. 5 – 7 with the Crate Late Models, Team USA Mod Lites and the 5th Annual World Street Stock Championship
