Bowen Leads Thursday Snowball Derby SLM Practice

A trio of Georgia based teams led Thursday’s practice for the 47th annual Snowball Derby, slated for Sunday afternoon at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL.

Suwanee, GA’s Anderson Bowen topped the Super Late Model speed charts with a lap at 16.481 seconds. He was followed by Daniel Hemric, piloting the Woodstock, GA based No. 98 for Carswell Motorsports, with a lap at 16.514. 2011 Snowball Derby winner Chase Elliott, of Dawsonville, GA, turned in a time of 16.569 for the third fastest lap of the day.

Ross Kenseth, son of NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Matt Kenseth, was fourth fastest on the scoring pylon with a lap of 16.580, while Oklahoma’s Donnie Wilson was fifth fastest at 16.582.

Derek Thorn was sixth, with Scotty Ellis seventh, Jeff Choquette eighth, defending Snowball Derby winner Erik Jones ninth and Jerry Artuso in tenth.

Other notables included John Hunter Nemechek in 11th, Harrison Burton in 12th, Corey LaJoie 15th, Senoia, GA’s Bubba Pollard 17th and Preston Peltier 20th.

In all, 64 Super Late Models took time in practice.

Sixty-five drivers took time in practice for Saturday night’s Pro Late Model Snowflake 100, led by Willie Allen with a lap at 16.780 seconds. Dan Leeck was second with a lap at 16.857, followed by Brad May (16.910), Zachary Knowles (16.913) and Harrison Burton (16.921).

William Byron, Oakwood, GA’s R.S. Senter, Grant Quinlan, Dillion Oliver and John Hunter Nemechek rounded out the top ten on the speed charts.

Other notables included Johanna Long in 11th, Dawsonville, GA’s Spencer Davis in 18th, Augie Grill in 19th and Pollard in 27th.

Action continues at 5 Flags Speedway on Friday, with pole qualifying for the Snowball Derby, along with racing from the local Super Stocks and Modified divisions.

Saturday includes the last chance races for both the Snowball Derby and the Snowflake, with the top four finishers in each transferring to their respective features. The local Pro Truck division will also be in action before the Pro Late Models take center stage for their 100 lap event.

That all leads up to Sunday, and the 300 lap Super Late Model Snowball Derby feature.
