SPARTA, KY – Brennan Poole spun out in practice, qualified eighth and was stuck behind Venturini Motorsports’ teammate Daniel Suarez late in Friday’s ZLOOP 150. It seemed unlikely that he would leave Kentucky Speedway with a win, but that’s just what he did, capturing his sixth career victory.
“Everything just unfolded for me,” a jubilant Poole said. “I love it when that happens. I’m so happy to get to victory lane for Venturini. It feels really, really nice. It’s just so special to win here. I can’t believe we won at Kentucky.”
Poole wasn’t expected to race Friday, but when Venturini driver John Wes Townley had a scheduling conflict, he stepped in the seat of the No. 15 Zaxby’s Toyota. The move paid off as Poole led the final 27 laps for the win.
Matt Tifft finished second in the No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet and point leader Mason Mitchell third in his Musselman’s-Wildlife Foundation of Florida-TTS Ford. Poole’s Venturini teammates Cody Coughlin (fourth), Daniel Suarez (fifth) and Justin Boston (ninth) also earned top 10 finishes. Coughlin’s fourth-place finish was his career ARCA best in the JEGS Toyota while Suarez led 39 laps in his first ARCA race.
Mitchell extended his point lead over Grant Enfinger to 200 points with one race remaining on the season. Enfinger left the race early with engine troubles and finished 30th.
“It’s really disappointing for everybody at GMS Racing,” Enfinger said from the garage.
Mitchell inched closer to his first career championship with his 11th top-five finish of the season. He will go to Kansas Speedway for the ARCA 98.9 on Friday, Oct. 3.
“It was a solid night for us,” he said. “Early on we raced pretty hard to lead a lap early and get those bonus points. I think we might have been able to go for the win there but we had a bad restart there at the end.”
Will Kimmel finished sixth, Justin Allison seventh, Kyle Weatherman eighth in his superspeedway debut for Roulo Brothers Racing and Tom Hessert 10th. Four-time Kentucky winner Frank Kimmel was 11th.
Louisville native Ben Rhodes finished 27th despite leading 26 laps. He was charging through the field after pitting for tires late in the race, but ended up hitting the wall, ruining his chances at a win. He was the leader from laps 49 to 73 when he went to pit road, surrendering the lead.
The ZLOOP 150 took 1 hour and 15 minutes to finish with the average speed being 119.940 mph. There were four cautions for 25 laps at the 1.5-mile tri-oval. Nineteen cars finished on the lead lap.
Boston, who won the Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell earlier in the day, led six laps.
Poole, meanwhile, became the second driver this season to replace Watkinsville, GA’s Townley only days before the race and go to victory lane. Kevin Swindell won at Springfield in a substitute role in the No. 15 Zaxby’s Toyota. Venturini now has five victories this season.
Poole credited his pit crew for helping him slide into the lead.
“The pit crew gave me the track position,” he said. “They did an awesome job. On that last restart, I was a little nervous. I knew we had to get out front of my teammate (Suarez) there because if not it would be very tough to pass him.”
