COMMERCE, GA –In spite of the rain forecast, racers from all over Georgia and part of South Carolina met at Atlanta Dragway for the final 2014 Summit ET Series points event, with final races to be won and championships to be decided.

Three of Atlanta Dragway’s young lions, Jeremy Hancock, Hank Wilhelm and Wesley Mayfield, had a shot at the 2014 Super Pro championship. Jeremy Hancock came into the day’s event second in points behind Hank Wilhelm, but took the points lead by crossing the win stripe 0.015 seconds in front of Wilhelm after they met in later rounds, with nine cars left in competition. Mayfield still had a mathematical chance, but that was ended at five cars when Hancock took that round win over Mayfield by 0.011 seconds.

In the final, Banks County racer Jeremy Hancock met another former champ, Doug Richardson of Ballground, GA. Richardson’s ’78 Nova crossed the top end stripe 0.003 seconds in front of Hancock, but his too quick 6.867 second breakout pass at 99.65 mph (6.87 second dial-in time) ensured Hancock’s victory. Hancock’s ’05 Undercover dragster posted a 4.73 at 146.40 mph (4.72 dial). Hancock’s wife Ashley Hancock (’03 Undercover – Banks County) was hoping to meet him in the final, but her day ended in the semi-final round

Pro winner and 2014 Pro Champion Chad Brewer from Canton, GA capped off a great year with a final round victory against Travis Bryant from Bowman, GA. Brewer debuted his ’73 Nova in early 2014, and did well for the majority of the season, taking the final points win of the season with a 6.940 at 99.16 mph(6.92 dial). Bowman’s ’68 Camaro was impressive with a 6.387 at 107.83 mph (6.37 dial), but an untimely -0.010 red light ended his day in the runner up spot. Wesley Tucker (’68 Camaro – Lawrenceville, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.

The Wagner family is no stranger to the winner’s circle, and on Saturday night Jefferson, GA racer Nick Wagner stepped up to the front by winning the 2014 Sportsman championship and the Sportsman event with his ’04 turbocharged five speed Neon. Wagner met another veteran in the final, Ed Nalley (’83 Chevy truck – Carnesville, GA) and took a narrow win by crossing the top end stripe 0.005 seconds in front with an 8.51 at 77.92 mph (8.43 dial). Nalley’s machine posted a closer 7.59 at 86.27 mph (7.55) but Wagner’s better react made the difference. Two former Division Two champs, Allen Long (’96 Silverado – Ballground, GA) and Marshall York (’72 Nova – Tallapoosa, GA) made it to the semi-final round.

2014 Super Pro Bike champion and race winner Jay Rhyne from Athens, GA came into the race one point behind close friend and competitor Tim Sutton, and stayed in that place all the way to the final round, where they met for what turned out to be a “winner-takes-all” final. Both were on their game, with only six thousandths of a second separating them at the starting line (0.023 react for Rhyne and 0.029 react for Sutton). The results at the finish line were also close, with Rhyne getting the nod courtesy of a dead-on 5.868 at 115.51 mph and Sutton posting a 5.69 at at 119.55 mph (5.66 dial). David Fletcher (’84 Kawasaki – Lawrenceville, GA) and Jimmy Heisler (’00 Kawasaki – Woodstock, GA) earned the semi-finalist portion of the purse.

Defending Street ET Bike champion Jimmy “ChaCha” Heisler (’00 Kawasaki – Woodstock, GA) earned a win against Randy Barnett (’08 Suzuki – Colbert, GA) in the final, taking the win stripe with a mere 0.009 second margin. Heisler’s time was 6.85 at 101.91 mph (6.81 target), and Barnett carded a 5.96 at 115.88 mph (5.93 dial). Newly crowned 2014 Street ET Bike champion Andrew Patterson (’06 Suzuki – Taylors, SC) suffered engine failure in his Super Pro Bike entry during time trials, so his remaining Street ET Bike entry did double duty for the rest of the event, carrying him to the semi-final round.

6-12 Jr Dragster racer Nate “Hot Rod” Halsey from Clermont, GA already had the 2014 championship sewed up coming in to the event. However, the eleven year old racer added an exclamation point to his season by taking the win against Ryan Blanton (10 – Jefferson, GA) with a good 8.92 at 72.67 mph (8.90 dial). Blanton’s machine picked up a little too much extra elapsed time with an 8.93 at 72.25 mph (9.05 dial). Zachary Goodwin (11 – McDonough, GA) took home a Racers Ministry semi-finalist trophy for his efforts.

Former 13 -17 JR Dragster champion Austin Carden (15 – McDonough, GA) came into the event with a small points lead, but had to outlast Katie Wilhelm and Bailey Dunn to win the 2014 championship. He did, and met Rachel Flowers (14 – Loganville, GA) in the final. Carden used a slightly better react to win with a 7.97 at 75.25 mph (7.90 dial). Flowers was close behind with an 8.03 at 82.08 mph (7.97 dial). Christopher Kittle (14 – Oxford, GA) and Alex Krause (16 – Peachtree City, GA) earned the Racers Ministry semi-finalist trophies for their efforts.
