COMMERCE, GA – Saturday’s Super Pro final at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA was guaranteed to produce a first time Summit ET Series points race winner, as both finalists, Wesley Mayfield of Gainesville, GA and Bruce Wilson from Tallapoosa, GA, had not won a Summit points event.
While not exactly a grizzled veteran, Mayfield’s experience helped take the win stripe with a dead-on 4.745 at 140.07 mph. Following close behind was first time Super Pro finalist Bruce Wilson, in just his third Super Pro event. Wilson’s ’01 Fabrication Concepts dragster broke out slightly with a 5.404 at 127.38 mph (5.41 dial-in time). John Hobbs (’69 Chevelle – Conyers, GA) and Randy Bruce (’78 Malibu – Conyers, GA) earned the semi-finalist portion of the purse. Mayfield has won two previous events, the 2013 Atlanta $10,000 and a 2013 NHRA Division Two shootout event.
For the second event in a row, Chad Brewer from Canton, GA rose to the top in Pro class. Brewer’s ’73 Nova was either on it’s dial or very close all day, and even though he broke out in the final with a 6.928 at 98.93 mph (6.94 dial), the race was already won after his opponent, Troy Fortner (’90 Mustang – Nicholson, GA) left the starting line too soon, lighting up the red foul bulb. Fortner’s car also broke out slightly with a 7.501 at 92.64 mph (7.52 dial). Gary Burel (’72 Nova – Donalds, SC) was the lone semi-finalist.
The Sportsman final featured another newcomer, Ben Bramlett (’13 Camaro – Dallas, GA) versus the grizzled veteran Rickey Morris (’98 Trans Am – Ellenwood, GA). However, Bramlett scored the upset victory with a dead-on 8.751 at 82.78 mph. Morris was second across the top end stripe by 0.002 seconds with an off pace 7.74 at 85.6 mph (7.68 dial). Marshall York (’72 Nova – Tallapoosa, GA) and Russell Haskins (’13 Mustang – Marietta, GA) were the semi-finalist pair.
Jay Rhyne was the big winner in Super Pro Bike, posting a 5.95 at 113.34 mph (5.92 dial) with his Athens, GA based ’82 Suzuki. His opponent, Adam Edwards (’05 Hayabusa – Winder, GA), was the victim of a red light start and then posted a 6.03 at 116.54 mph (6.02 target). Tim Sutton (’83 Suzuki – Clermont, GA) and David Fletcher (’84 Kawasaki – Lawrenceville, GA) won the semi-finalist purse.
Randy Barnett from Colbert, GA earned the Street ET Bike win with his ’08 Suzuki against Andrew Patterson of Taylors, SC. After seeing the win light in his lane right after he left the starting line (Patterson had a heart-breaking -0.006 react en route to a perfect 5.590 at 129.68 mph, 5.59 dial), Barnett posted the race winning 6.05 at 120.23mph (6.10 dial). Tom Ulrich (Kawasaki – Kennesaw, GA) and Michael Mann (’06 Hayabusa – Mt. Airy, GA) ended their day in the semi-final round.
Girl power ruled in both Jr. Dragster classes, beginning with 13-year-old Snellville, GA racer Macey Ludolph’s victory over Jacob Wilson (11 – Tallapoosa, GA) in 8-12 Jr. Dragster. Ludolph’s better reaction time gave her the luxury of running 9.10 at 71.16 mph (9.00 dial). Wilson was a little closer to the dial with a 9.01 at 70.41mph (8.94 dial). Jackson Earwood (11 – Cleveland, GA) earned points up to the semi-final round.
Jessie Daniel (13 – Loganville, GA) prevailed in the 13-17 Jr. Dragster class with the win against Wesley Syme (14 – Atlanta, GA). Syme actually crossed the big end stripe first, but broke out with a 7.98 at 79.96mph (8.04 dial). Daniel’s 7.96 at 81.48mph (7.90 dial) put the first place trophy on her mantel at home. Maddie Kate Halsey (13 – Clermont, GA) and Adrian Wilson (14 – Tallapoosa, GA) were the semi-finalists.
