HAMPTON, GA – Thunder rolled into Atlanta Motor Speedway on June 5 for week two of the summer racing series Thursday Thunder. Fans experienced electrifying action and heated battles in a handful of divisions while weather has forced other divisions to run double features in week three.

The Estes Services Masters Division remained one of the most competitive at Thursday Thunder as Skip Nichols of Albany danced through the field to earn his 51st feature win at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Nichols started in the eighth position but was able to move up to third before a caution came out midway through the race. Restarting from the outside, Nichols and Bill Plemons, Jr. of Locust Grove made contact in turn one before Nichols slipped to the front and held the lead to the checkered flag as he added to his points lead.

A heated race over the final six laps saw numerous passes, but pole sitter Jensen Jorgensen of Stockbridge held off a trio of racers to capture the 15th Street Pizza and Pub Outlaw Bandolero feature.

“That was an awesome race with Ashton (Winger). And Josh (Hicks) and Chase (Purdy) were fast too,” said Jorgensen, after stepping out of his Bandolero. “It was one of the most fun races I’ve been involved in.”

Jorgensen held a commanding lead through the midpoint of the race, but a caution on lap 11 bunched up the field. Jorgensen, along with Winger of Fayetteville, Purdy of Gallion, AL and Hicks of Senoia battled over the final eight laps of the race as the quartet exchanged the lead from corner to corner around the track. Jorgensen slipped underneath Hicks in turn one on the white flag lap and drove to the checkered flag for the win.

Starting back in the sixth spot, R.S. Senter of Oakwood wove his way through the field to capture the Allred Family Dentistry Semi-Pro feature for his second win of the season. Senter needed just three laps to move to the front of the pack as he passed pole sitter Bailey Woodall of McDonough along with Amber Fleeman of Dacula. William Martin of Douglasville challenged Senter after a pair of late race cautions but was unable to get past the leader.

Woodrow Mullis led from flag to flag in the Young Lions feature. With the win, Mullis added to his points lead in the division. Zach Leonhardi, who entered week two action in second place in the driver standings, finished fourth after mechanical issues knocked him out of the race with eight laps to go and pushed him into third. He is now in third, one point back of Nashville’s Blake Gaither in the driver standing.

Following the Young Lions feature, thunder and inclement weather overtook the racing action at Atlanta Motor Speedway and cancelled the final feature races of the evening.

Racing action returns to the Thunder Ring on June 12 with a complete slate of feature races. In addition, the divisions that did not run feature races in week two due to inclement weather will run double feature races as part of the action in week three.
