NEWTON, NC – Josh Berry picked up his fourth win of the season during the fifth round of the Paramount KIA Big-10 Race Challenge Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway in Newton, NC.
Berry earned the pole position and brought the field to the green flag. Several caution periods broke out during the early laps, putting Ashley Huffman and Austin McDaniel in position to battle for the lead following the lap 15 restart. As the race progressed, Berry worked his way back to the front of the field, picking up his fourth win of the season. Dillon Bassett finished in second, with Ashley Huffman in third, Landon Huffman in fourth and Todd Gilliland in fifth.
Casey Pierce earned the pole position for the 35-lap Gold King Limited Late Model feature, but his time out front didn’t last long as Dexter Canipe, Jr. took over the top spot during the first lap and pulled away from the field. A lap 26 caution allowed Pierce to catch Canipe, Jr. and the two swapped paint as they battled for the lead on lap 29. The contact sent Pierce for a spin and collected Travis Byrd. Following a red-flag period, Canipe, Jr. continued out front, but received pressure from the No. 51 of Jeremy Pelfrey. Canipe, Jr. went on to pick up the win, with Pelfrey in second, Taylor Stricklin in third, Trent Barnes in fourth and Monty Cox in fifth.
Kevin Townsend led the Street Stock division to the green flag for their 30-lap event and went on to lead every lap of the caution filled race. With just over five laps remaining, Kevin Eby began to put pressure on Townsend for the lead. But Townsend powered on to victory lane, leaving Eby to settle for second. A tough battle for third broke out during the final laps between Marshall Sutton and Jonathan Smith. Sutton would prevail over Smith, allowing the two to finish third and fourth, respectively. Wayne Edwards rounded out the top five.
The Super Trucks hit the track for a 35-lap race, with Spencer Boyd in the lead position. The race was filled with a chain reaction of caution periods that started before the first lap was completed when Rickie Dennie and Dakota Slagel got together. Boyd was able to maintain his position out front and went on to pick up the checkered flag. Slagel, Lee Queen, Whitney Lail and Mark Johnson rounded out the top five.
Kenneth Roberts took the green flag from the pole position for the WrenchRags Renegades and remained out front for the caution-free event. Roberts collected the win and left Darren Dickinson in second, Kyle Divanna in third, Stephen Shore in fourth and Shawn Hayes in fifth.
The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action returns Saturday for Whelen Night at the Races featuring the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Bojangles’ Late Models, the Gold King Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, the WrenchRags Renegades, 4-Cylinders and the Sportsmen Racing Classics.
