The Eagle Jet Top Gun Sprints made their first appearance at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL Saturday night, with Sport Allen powering his way to the victory and a $1,000 payday at the famed “Clay By The Bay.”

When the green waved for the feature, it was Tim George leading the way until lap two, when Johnny Gilbertson took over the lead. One lap later, Billy Boyd, Jr. slowing on the backstretch, ending his night. On the restart Gilbertson led the way again. By lap eight Danny Martin, Jr. had moved to second, and one lap later, powered around Gilbertson to take the lead. On lap 10, Brandon Grubaugh spun in turn two and with nowhere to go the Martin, Jr. tangled with Rex Howe in turn two. That would put Martin, Jr. to the tail end of the pack and moved Gilbertson back to the lead.

On the restart it was Gilbertson leading with Kerry Gilbert and Mark Ruel, Jr. in pursuit. On lap 12 Martin, Jr. tangled with Rebecca George with George hitting the front stretch wall. George was okay but her night was over.

Back under green, Gilbertson would continue to show the way, with Ruel, Jr. and Allen giving chase, followed by Kerry Gilbert and A.J. Maddox.

The field would tighten up over the closing laps, and when the checkered flag flew, it was Allen scoring the victory, with Maddox in second, Martin, Jr. in third, Ruel, Jr. in fourth and Gilbertson in fifth.

“When the green flag waved I gave up as we struggled all night” Allen said. “As the race went on I was able to adjust the wing inch after inch and found myself a line along the top side of the track and was able to stick with it.”

In other action, Scotty Kay, Jr. and Thomas Burnside brought the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks down to green, with Kay, Jr. moving out to the early lead, followed by Burnside and Ronnie Whitley. The first caution flew when Robert Morfin, Sr. spun in turn four on the third lap. Kay would continue to show the way until the caution flew on lap 11, when Chris Graebner’s car went up in smoke. Kay, Jr. would retake the lead on the restart, but Gay was able to make the pass for the top spot late in the going, and went on to win his fourth feature of the season. Kay, Jr. finished in second, with Burnside in third, Buck Woodhouse in fourth and Billy Barstow in fifth.

Eighteen drivers took the green flag for the Florida Mini Sprints feature, with Robby Hoffman leading wire-to-wire in the caution free feature to score the win. John Moss, John Craddock, Conner Borah and Robbie Smith rounded out the top five.

The final feature of the night was the Limited Late Models, with Dale Pope moving out to the early lead. Pope would lead through several cautions, but on lap 10, Forrest Gough moved alongside to challenge. The two would race side-by-side, swapping the lead back and forth. Coming to the checkerd flag, the leaders split a lapped car, with Gough coming across the finish line just inches ahead of Pope. Jason Pope finished in third, with Scotty Williams in fourth and Stephen Hohlbaugh in fifth.

Racing continues Saturday night with action from the Late Models, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks, V8 Warriors and the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. For further information, visit eastbayracewaypark.com.
