Bubba Pollard Paces Thursday Snowball Practice

The haze around the question of who might pace the field as the pole sitter for Sunday’s 46th annual Snowball Derby at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL began to clear with the opening day of practice on Thursday.

And the answer should come as a surprise to no one.

Bubba Pollard turned the fastest time around the legendary Florida half mile in Thursday’s practice, ripping off a lap at 16.552, in the neighborhood of 108.74 mph.

The Senoia, GA speedster is the track record holder for Super Late Models, having turned a lap at 16.145, 111.5 mph in May of this year.

Alabama’s Augie Grill, a two time Snowball Derby champion, has yet to put his name on the list of pole sitters for the famed event. He was second fastest in Thursday’s practice. 2013 Southern Super Series champion Daniel Hemric was third fastest. Zak Hausler turned in the fourth fastest time, while Kyle Benjamin timed in at fifth.

Grant Enfinger, Anderson Bowen, Casey Smith, David Rogers and Dawsonville, GA’s Spencer Davis rounded out the top ten on the speed charts.

Other notables included T.J. Reaid putting in the 12th fastest time, second generation racer John Hunter Nemechek in 15th, Hunter Robbins, driving for 1977 Snowball Derby winner Ronnie Sanders in 17th, D.J. Vanderley in 18th, Stephen Nasse in 22nd, defending Snowball Derby winner Erik Jones in 23rd, NASCAR Sprint Cup driver David Ragan, who won the pole for last year’s Snowball, in 28th, Cale Gale in 32nd, and World Crown 300 winner Preston Peltier in 33rd.

In all, 48 cars took time in practice. Qualifying for the 46th annual Snowball Derby is slated for Friday, with the top 30 locking in on time.

Meanwhile, Thursday night saw the opening of racing action for the Snowball Derby weekend, as the Bomber and Sportsman divisions did battle.

B.J. Leytham started the Bomber feature from the pole, and went on to score the victory. Ryan Worsham finished in second, with Donnie Phillips in third.

Steve Buttrick beat out Shanna Ard for the Sportsman feature win, with Johnny Greene coming home in third. The official Sportsman finishing order is pending further tech analysis, according to a track release.

All results are unofficial until certified by race officials.

Action continues at 5 Flags Speedway Friday, with pole qualifying for Sunday’s Snowball Derby on tap, along with 50 lap features for the Super Stock and Modified.
