Billy Boyd, Jr. came into the final points night for the East Bay Sprints at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL Saturday night with a narrow points lead. He turned that slim advantage into a championship by scoring a victory at the famed “Clay By The Bay”.
D.J. Peeples, Keith Butler and Boyd, Jr. started off the night by scoring victories in their respective heat races. Frank Beck and Boyd, Jr. would make up the front row for the feature. When the green waved Boyd, Jr. quickly took the lead with a hard charging David Steele moving to second. Several cautions came out during the beginning of the race with Boyd, Jr. showing the way and Steele trying to hunt him down.
On lap 11, Ken Laureno lost his front wheel after making contact with the front stretch wall, ending his night. On the restart, Boyd, Jr. stayed out in front with Steele trying to reel him in while defending division champion Kerry Gilbert, who came into the night second in points, moved to third.
The final caution would come out with just two to go as Butler had problems that ended his night. When the checkered flag waved Boyd, Jr. found himself in victory lane and the division champion. Boyd had five starts on the year, with four wins out of those five.
Rounding out the top five were Steele, Beck, Gilbert and Kyle Pitts.
In other action, the first feature of the night went to the V8 Warriors with Jody Robbins and Jeff Weaver winning their heats. Raymond Vann and Bo Anderson made up the front row for the feature. When the green flag waved, Vann quickly took over the lead until the first caution came out on lap one when Ron Smith and Henry Wiley tangled in turn one. On the restart, Jeff Weaver took over the lead, holding the top spot until lap four when the caution came out for Wiley spinning in turn one. Back under green, Tommy Hill took over the lead on lap 10 with the caution coming out once again. Hill would retain the lead only to give way to Weaver on lap 12. Weaver went on to score his fifth feature win of the year. Hill finished in second, with Vann in third, Don Foligno in fourth and Brett Phillips in fifth.
Next up were the Late Models. Winning their heats were Jack Nosbisch, Jr., John Koller and Travis Varnadore. It would be Koller and Nosbisch, Jr. making up the front row for the feature. Nosbisch, Jr. took the early lead with Doug Horton right behind him. The first caution of the night flew when Adam Boyd spun in turn two on lap three. Back under green, Nosbich, Jr., Horton and Travis Varnadore made their way through lapped traffic until Wallace Peacock slowed and came to rest bringing out the caution.
Nosbisch, Jr. continued to lead the way until lap 15 when Jimmy Waldrop hit the front stretch wall ending his night. With just two laps remaining Koller and Crouse tangled in turn four with Nosbisch, Jr. just missing the two cars. That set up a two lap dash for Nosbisch, Jr. as he went on to win second feature in his third time behind the wheel of his new Rocket Chassis car. Horton came home in second, with Travis Varnadore third, Steve Miller fourth and Mavrick Varnadore in fifth.
Next up were the Outlaw Fours. Winning the heat was Billy Howard as he and Nick Hebrank made up the front row for the feature. Howard quickly took over the top spot with Zach Amundsen right on his back bumper lap after lap. By lap 10 the two were side by side at the line with Howard over Amundsen by just a half a car length. Howard would go on to win with Zach Amundsen, Jesse James Foster, Nick Hebrank and William Hampton rounding out the top five.
The last feature of the night belonged to the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Winning their heats were Jimmy Baker and John Moore. Making up the front row would be Michael Lacey and Don R. Quinn. Lacey quickly led the first three laps until caution came out for debris on the track. Lacey would lead the way once the race resumed until Baker took over the lead on lap four. Baker was being chased by point’s leader John Moore, as the duo battled side-by-side at the line several times. Moore took over the lead on the final lap and went on to victory lane, picking up his 10th feature win of the year. Baker finished second, followed by George Handy, Lacey and Kayla Jones.
ASA racing continues next weekend with the Late Models, Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks, V8 Warriors and the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. For more information, visit eastbayracewaypark.com.
