World Crown 300 champion Preston Peltier showed he’s ready to add a Nashville guitar to his trophy shelf, as the veteran Super Late Model champion paced Friday’s practice for the 29th annual All American 400, the season finale for the Southern Super Series, at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville, scheduled for Saturday night.
Peltier turned the overall fastest lap in the first of two practice sessions on the day at the Nashville, TN speedway with a lap at 19.151 seconds.
Oklahoma speedster Donnie Wilson, who finished third in the SSS season opener in April at Nashville, was second on the speed charts with a lap at 19.164.
Chase Elliott, who is looking to become the first driver to win the All American 400, the World Crown 300, the Winchester 400 and the Snowball Derby proved he will be a force to be reckoned with on Saturday night by turning in the third fastest time. His lap at 19.165 seconds around the Music City 5/8 mile layout, came in the second Friday practice session.
Johnny VanDoorn, winner of this year’s Redbud 300 at Anderson Speedway and a former All American champ, turned in the fourth fastest lap with a 19.203. Trey Mitchell rounded out the top five with a 19.228.
Daniel Hemric, who is second in Southern Super Series points coming into the series finale, was sixth fastest, with Winchester 400 winner Erik Jones, driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports, in seventh. Two-time All American winner Eddie Hoffman was eighth, with Tennessee’s Willie Allen in ninth and Georgia’s Spencer Davis in 10th.
The race within the race on Saturday will be for the Southern Super Series title. Senoia, Georgia’s Bubba Pollard comes into the night with a 46 point advantage over Hemric in the points battle. With the points race down to a two person fight, Pollard turned in the 15th fastest time overall, while Hemric timed in sixth fastest.
Pollard is considered one of the favorites going in after he dominated the season opener at Nashville back in April scoring the inagural SSS victory in a 125 lap event. Prior to that, Pollard had finished second to Ross Kenseth in the 2012 running of the All American 400, which was shortened due to rain.
Kenseth, meanwhile, timed in slightly faster than Pollard, as the defending champion turned a lap at 19.325.
Other notable drivers turning in time during Friday’s practice included Casey Roderick (11th), John Hunter Nemechek (12th), Kyle Benjamin (17th), Stephen Nasse (18th), 2010 race winner T.J. Reaid (20th), 2000 race winner Mike Garvey (22nd), Augie Grill (30th), Hunter Robbins and (33rd).
In all, 46 cars logged laps in practice on Friday.
In other action, the Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville Pro Late Model division also practiced for their 100 lap season finale, to be run on Saturday prior to the Southern Super Series feature.
Two-time Daytona 500 champion and division points leader Sterling Marlin paced practice with a lap at 19.737, but saw his day take a sour turn when he was caught up in an accident with Austin Brawley. It appeared that Marlin and his team would attempt to repair their primary car Friday night, but has a back up car standing by.
Waylon Jenkins was second on the speed charts, with Jake Griffin in third, Trey Craig in fourth and Chase Chaffin in fifth.
Garvin Landers, Kyle McCallum, Tucker Wingo, Hunter Baize and Dennis Reno, Jr. rounded out the top ten.
The 29th annual All American 400 is set for Saturday, Nov. 2, with grandstan gates opening at 2:30 pm. Super Late Model qualifying rolls off at 2:30 pm, with Pro Late Model qualifying following at 4 pm. Last Chance races, if needed, will be run at 5 pm. The 100 lap Pro Late Model feature is scheduled for a 6 pm start, with the Southern Super Series 300 lap season finale to follow.
