Eric Riggins, Jr. from Charlotte, NC raced into USCS victory lane at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, NC in the 5th annual USCS Carolina Thunder Nationals Round #1 and USCS vs. URC North vs. South Shootout on Friday night.
Riggins took the lead from early race leader and 2012 event Champion Johnny Bridges from Cherryville, NC on lap 11, then led the final 19 laps of the contest to win the 30-lap contest. It was Riggins’ fourth career United Sprint Car Series feature win, second win of the season and third total at the track he would consider his home track.
Josh Weller, who came into the event in the second position in the URC (United Racing Corp.) point standings charged across the finish line in the runner-up spot. Current URC point’s leader, J.J. Grasso followed in the K&N Filter Podium Award third place. Sprint car veteran Billy Pauch, Jr. finished in fourth place. Morgan Turpen charged from 15th starting position to round out the top five drivers.
Jonathan Swanson led the next group of drivers in sixth place. Keith Prutzman finished in seventh place followed by ten-time USCS national champion Terry Gray in eighth place. Troy Betts followed in ninth place and Dan Mazy rounded out the top ten finishers.
USCS National point’s leader Derek Hagar kicked of the evening’s action by winning the Hoosier Speed Dash. Riggins won the first heat. Grasso won the second heat. Pauch, Jr. won the third heat and Chandler Leiby won the fourth heat race. Turpen got the victory in the 12-lap B-Main contest. After the high passing points earner Riggins drew a four in the K&N Filters Pole drawing, Johnny Bridges garnered the K&N Filters Pole Award.
In other action Friday night, Justin Lineman From Saisbury, NC bested a talented 16 car field of USCS 600 Sprint Car Series contenders at Carolina Speedway to score his first USCS victory of the year.
Lineman took the lead early from pole sitter Trevor Baker and then held off the challenges of Rick Goss. Goss chased Lineman across the finish line in the runner-up spot followed by Baker in third place. Coby Adams finished in fourth place and Jim Young rounded out the top five drivers.
Dan Jones finished in sixth place and Tom Schearerr finished in seventh. USCS regular Mike Magic from Winder, Georgia followed in eighth place. Chuck was ninth and Kyle Amerson completed the top ten drivers.
Sean Hosey kicked off the evenings racing action by winning the five-lap Hoosier Race Tire Speed Dash. Magic then won the first heat. Lineman gathered the win in the second heat.
