The points race for the 2013 championship came into focus in multiple divisions in Week 1 of the Fall Stampede of Friday Night Drags at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
In the Super Pro Class, Mike Ramsey of Canton is now deadlocked with Bobby Daniel of Stockbridge with 27 points each. With a newly rebuilt engine that had only five heat cycles before Friday’s action on his 2010 Dragster, Ramsey edged out Daniel in the final.
“I tire-shook the first 200 feet… it was almost like riding a machine gun it was shaking so hard, but it finally hooked and I drove by him by about 10 feet – It was a close run,” said Ramsey. “To have a motor that has five heat cycles on it and to run this well, we are amazed. It’s been great.”
Alan Kidd of Locust Grove in his 1969 Chevrolet Camaro posted the win in the Pro Class final over David Craft of McDonough in his 1986 Chevrolet Corvette to go up by one in the point standings. Craft and Kidd, who have been the division’s top two drivers for most of the season, easily advanced to the final to face each other again.
In his first time behind the wheel of the Queen family 1994 Dodge Dakota, Jonathan Queen of Fayetteville posted the win over Richard Brackett of Forest Park in the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Class.
“What a rush. It was pretty exciting driving but it was tough jumping into the car because you don’t want to let the other drivers down,” said Queen. “I was happy with my burn out and was just looking for yellow and getting down the track; I danced with (the car) a little bit but then got the win.”
With 30 points on the year, Tony Morse of Grantville has the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Class championship already locked up with the final night of drag racing on September 20.
Toney Freeman of Stockbridge, who already wrapped up the championship, continued to add to his points lead in the Cycle Nation Super Bike Class with his third consecutive victory at Friday Night Drags.
One night of racing remains and Vince Ponder needs to make one pass down the drag strip in his 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse to capture the Tuner Class on championship night September 20 as he outdueled Damon Waldrop in the final on Friday night. For Waldrop and his 1994 Honda Civic, it was his first race in the Tuner Class this year.
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Friday Night Drags will crown champions in the final night of the drag racing season and the Fall Stampede on September 20. Grandstand gates open at 6:30 pm and nightly drag race eliminations start at 9:15 pm.
