Gary Brand was the only driver who could sweep Saturday night’s double feature action at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA.
Brand needed every single foot of the Georgia red clay to accomplish the feat as he inched past Griffin’s Mike Archer at the finish line to win the second round main in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks. All other divisions saw two different feature winners making this the most wide open event in the four year history of the Moses brothers operation of the 3/8 mile speed plant.
Joining Brand in victory lane were LaGrange’s Tod Darda and Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris splitting the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Model features. Winning in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets were Roopville’s Clifton Moran and Alabama’s Roger Arnett. Mini Stock checkers went to Barnesville’s Gary Parker and Bobby Arnold of Newnan while 14-year-old Trey Wood of Newnan and Riverdale’s Mike Ray each picked up hardware in the Bombers. Carrolton’s Dustin Smith and Villa Rica’s Todd Brewster were the victors in the Modified Mini division.
Brand dominated the first round feature for the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks. LaGrange’s Jake Traylor battled with Locust Grove’s Wilson Boozer for the runner-up spot with Traylor working past on lap nine to secure the second place position.
In the second race, Archer jumped to the early lead holding back Williamson’s Houston Hatchett for most of the laps. Gary Brand worked his way up through the field as did the night’s hard charger Jake Traylor.
On the final lap, Brand jumped to the inside of Archer out of turn four while Traylor charged to the top side. The three bounced off each other at the line with Brand nosing in front to win and Archer sliding up into Traylor sending him into the front stretch wall. The winner ended up slamming the turn one wall after the checkers had fallen over the field. The sweep also secured the Jewel Series title for Brand as he won the series within a series for Senoia Raceway competitors.
Gary Parker climbed through the field in Mini Stock feature race number one taking the lead just past the halfway point from Newnan’s rookie contender Brandon Libri. The former champion and defending Jewel Series titlist notched his sixth win of the year over Newnan’s Brandon Bright and Griffin’s Alex Rudolph.
The second race for the Mini Stock was dominated by Bobby Arnold as the current divisional points leader led all laps en route to his eighth feature win of the year. Bright would finish as the bridesmaid again followed by Parker in third. Parker’s third place finish was good enough to deliver him a second straight Jewel Series championship.
Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran has won over fifty feature races at Senoia Raceway, but had not been able to crack into the winner’s circle since his recent move to the Newnan Bonding B Cadets. That changed on Saturday night after the feisty veteran worked past a tough Jason Miller to win the first of two main events. Miller showed his strongest run of the season until the Moran worked past him in turn four on lap nine. Miller would hold on to finish second and secure the number one spot in the standings for rookie contenders.
The second feature race went to the current overall points leader in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets Roger Arnett. The Alabama hot shoe started in front and never looked posting the win over Moran and LaGrange’s Buck Ussery. The win also gave Arnett the Jewel Series title for 2013.
Fourteen-year-old Newnan high schooler Trey Wood held off Newnan’s Kevin Evans in the first Bomber feature and then was caught up in a crash during the second race. Wood was trying to sneak past the spun car of Alabama’s Bill Smith when he came down the track and clipped the right rear of Wood. Both cars would end up in the pit area.
Hogansville driver Georgia Purgason’s racer went up in flames on the backstretch after a fire was ignited from a blown engine. Purgason was making his return after nearly destroying his ride in late July during a horrific crash in turn one.
On the restart, Mike Ray shot past Bonaire’s Steven Jensen, Jr. to take the lead and he never looked back posting the win over Peachtree City’s Randy Cornwell and Kevin Evans. Jensen, Jr. held on for fourth which was good enough to land him the Jewel Series laurels for the Bomber division.
Dustin Smith got the jump on the field in each of the Modified Mini initial starts. The first race ended up being his, but the second one ended with car problems giving his closest rival Todd Brewster the victory. Newnan’s Joe Spencer stayed out of trouble in both races to claim the Jewel Series title.
The Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models ran 15 laps clean during round one on Saturday night. Tod Darda secured the win over Newnan’s Craig Scott and Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher. But the second race was not as pretty.
On the drop of the green, outside pole sitter Austin Horton of Grantville was bumped by the car behind sending him down into traffic and collecting nearly the entire field including the top cars from the first race.
After the clean-up, Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris cruised to his third win of the season and the top spot in the Jewel Series for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models. Thomaston’s Laddie Fulcher was second ahead of Newnan’s Marcus Caswell.
The double features also scrambled the overall points chases and with only a couple of race weekends remaining drivers will be racing hard to secure their spot in the top ten. Senoia Raceway will honor the top ten drivers in the season point standings, award bonus money to the top finishers in each division and present hardware to the best rookie contenders.
Gary Brand closed in on the points lead for the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks while Jake Traylor is within striking distance for that division’s rookie title.
Hampton’s Brandon Brock and Alex Rudolph will battle through the final races of the season to determine the Mini Stocks number one rookie. They also need to look over their shoulders as Gary Parker closes in on their overall standing within the Mini Stocks. Parker won the season title for the Mini Stocks in 2011.
The closest race is now in the Bomber division where Randy Cornwell has pulled to within twenty-four points of Newnan’s Michael Nelms for the championship points lead. Cornwell has been chasing Nelms all season, but will need a few more cars to compete to gain the points needed to chase down the points lead.
