Buzzie Reutimann powered to the lead in the opening lap of the Open Wheel Modified feature, and led wire-to-wire to win the 50 lap Larry Miller Memorial at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL Friday night, netting a $2,000 pay day in the process.
Reutimann and Bruce Harvey won their heats, and made up the front row for the feature. Reutimann led the way into turn one, and would lead the first 20 laps. The first caution came out on lap 20, when as Jerry Bruce spun out of fifth place.
The caution would fly again two laps later when Nate Bregenzer spun in turn one. At the halfway point, Reutimann held the lead over Matt Miller, Bruce Harvey, Steve Miller and Devin Dixon. Caution waved again on lap 30, when Dale Kelley spun in turn two. The caution would wave again on lap 40, as Matt Miller out of fourth in turn two.
In the end, Reutimann was able to hold off the charges of Dixon to score the victory.
“If the fans could see my dash they saw a red light flashing and it was my oil temperature getting hot so I had to keep going and go for the win,” said Reutimann in victory lane. He also thanked his son, NASCAR Sprint Cup driver David Reutimann, for his support.
Dixon, Miller, Bill Howard and Austin Sanders rounded out the top five finishers.
In other action, the first feature of the night went to the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks as William Burnside and Mike Wilson won their heats and made up the front row for the feature event. When the green waved it was Wilson taking charge and leading the way for the first 11 laps. The first caution flew when William Burnside spun in turn four while battling with his brother Thomas for the third position. On the restart it was Wilson leading the way with Jeff Rodgers and Thomas Burnside making up the top three. On lap 13, caution flew again when Thomas Burnside spun out in turn two out of third position. Wilson went on to win his first feature of the 2013 Season. Jeff Rodgers finished in second, with Dennis Wilson, Jr. in third, Buck Woodhouse in fourth, and Michael Eaton in fifth.
Next up were the Florida Old Time Modifieds, with Dan Darnell winning the heat. Bob Fink and Tom McDonald made up the front row for the feature. McDonald led the first lap, but was overtaken by a hard charging Roger Herbach took over on lap two. Jamie Franklin moved to the lead on lap four, and would hold the top spot until the checkered flag waved. David Kelly came home in second, with Darnell third, Herbach in fourth, and McDonald in fifth.
The Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers closed out the night, with John Moore and Darrell Taylor winning their heats. Kayla Jones and Jimmy Baker made up the front row. Just before the feature had started, a light shower was starting to fall over the track. When the green waved, the cars seemed to slide and the yellow was thrown. After a short delay, the drivers headed back out onto the track for a complete restart. When the green waved again it was Baker taking the lead with Moore and Raymond Vann giving chase. On lap three Moore took over the lead with Vann in second and Baker third. The first caution would come out on lap six for debris. Moore would go on to hold off Vann and Baker to pick up his eighth win of the season. Don R. Quinn and Darrell Taylor rounded out the top five.
