While the World Crown 300 took top billing at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, GA Saturday night, the speedway’s local divisions also crowned their champions in their final races of the year.
In the mini stock division, Aaron Calvert came from the middle of the pack to the front in just seven laps, taking the top spot from Avery Burgess. But Calvert’s car slowed with two laps to go, giving Burgess the win in the race and the mini stock championship.
Calvert had the field in his control until the caution flag waved on lap 16 of 20 for a solo spin by Greg Swink. The late-race restart did Burgess’ closest championship competitor, Spanky Hicks, in. Hicks’ car would not fire as the rest of the field charged past him. The race was slowed one more time on lap 18 of 20 when Scotty Beck spun in turn 4 battling with Burgess for second.
On the restart, the field passed Calvert’s car by on the backstretch. Calvert’s misfortune gave Burgess the lead and the win.
“Man, what a great way to win the race and the championship,” Burgess said in victory lane. “I thought I lost it on that last restart. We lucked out on the last caution.
“It just feels great to win the championship.”
Up next, the Sportsman and Renegade divisions ran together for a 15-lap feature. Jeff Chadwick led wire-to-wire to take the Sportsman win and championship crown, while Bryan Beckner followed the same suit in the Renegade class.
Chadwick had a tougher go of it, however. On the second lap, he fought off a charge from Jackie Daniel. The two tangled in turn 2, and the contact sent Daniel’s car spinning. After the race, Daniel chased after Chadwick, first on the track and then in victory lane.
“It was good, hard tight racing — it’s two race car drivers going for the same place,” Chadwick said. “We both weren’t going to give an inch, and – hold on.”
After exchanging words with Daniel, the two drivers were restrained by track security. Chadwick went back to the interview.
“I’m glad to win and anything, but you don’t give in,” he said. “I was holding my ground. I was getting pinched and I wasn’t going to back down.”
Hoyt Stevens looked to be on his way to a win in the Outlaw Late Model division, but racing luck was not on his side. With five laps to go, Stevens’ engine expired in turn 4, handing over the lead and the win to Jason Bates. Brian Hardmann finished a close second while David Murphy came home third.
In the Truck division, Matt Vassar took the lead from Kevin Vassar on the second lap and drove off to claim his third win of the year in a caution-free affair. Kevin Vassar was flagged in second, but was disqualified in post race tech, moving Emilee Riley to the runner up position.
