Kenneth Headen has an answer for why he is unbeatable in the Southeast Super Trucks Series at Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, SC.

“I tell you, we’ve got a really great hot rod,” he said. On Saturday night in upstate South Carolina, he was telling the truth.

Headen needed just eight laps to move from his fourth-place starting spot to get to the front of the 15-truck field. Once he grabbed the lead, he held it for the duration of the 75-lap feature, besting Randy Porter, Mart Nesbitt, Tim Lollis and Kevin Leight.

On the restarts after the three caution periods – all for minor spins and fender-benders – Headen ran away and hid from his closest pursuers, which proved to be a rotating cast of characters. Lollis started on the pole and led the first seven laps, but he was never closer to Headen than on the lap Headen took the lead from him.

While he couldn’t keep up with Headen, Lollis held the second position over a hornets nest made up of Marty Ward, Leight and Nesbitt. Ward’s bid came to an end when he spun around in turn 4, bringing out the final caution on lap 45.

With 30 laps to go, Porter had moved up fifth, quite the feat in its own right. For hours, Porter’s crew worked under his truck repairing the rear end gear. Without qualifying, he started at the rear of the field and quickly found trouble in the form of Ed Surrett’s spinning pickup in turn 2. Surrett’s truck tore the front sheet metal off of Porter’s ride and sent him to the rear of the field again.

But while Headen cruised, Porter bruised his way through the pack. On the final lap, he joined and took over the battle for second.

Porter sneaked under Lollis and Nesbitt as the trio drove into turn 1. After the three leaned on each other, it was Porter who came away with the runner-up position.

Make no mistake: there was no contest for first.

“When you got a team like I got, anybody can drive this thing,” Headen said. “It was like we were on a rail.”

The second half of the double feature saw R.A. Brown score a wire-to-wire win in the Late Model feature over Kenneth Headen, Eric Stokes, Anders and Austin Aker.

A five-row inversion put Brown on the pole for the 50-lap feature, and he made good use of the track position. Randy Porter gave chase early but brought out the early caution after his car blew a right front tire in turn 1. Porter kept his car off the wall but retired for the evening with a suspension failure.

After an immediate follow-up caution on lap 4 for debris, Brown took off as the field raced to the checkered flag. By the time Headen worked his way around Eric Stokes for second on lap 42, Brown had built up a 2.5-second advantage.

Stokes cut Brown’s lead in half during the last 7 laps, but Brown cruised to victory – his first of the season.

In the Legends division, Tyler Green and Riley Halverson traded the lead back and forth for the final 10 laps of the 20-lap feature. Halverson started on the pole and led the first 10 laps, but Green was never far behind.

Green got the best of Halverson off turn 4 on lap 11, but Halverson charged back to the lead on lap 14. Green took the lead for good with three laps to go and brought Trey Eidson and Austin Osborn with him.

Green took the win, with Eidson, Osborn, Halverson and Kevin Ellison rounding out the top five in a race that ran caution-free.

In the Super Renegade feature, Barry Tollison, Jr. scored his first win of the year by leading all the laps in another caution-free race. Sammy Staggs chased him around every turn but could never find a way by. He settled for second, with Barry Tollison, Sr., Rick Kelley and James Johnson completing the top five.

Joey Kelly won another Front Wheel Drive feature despite starting from the tail of the 20-car field. He overtook Brian King on the penultimate lap to grab the victory. King held on for second, while Tommy Davis took third.
