South Alabama Speedway in Opp, AL celebrated its 40th birthday Saturday night. Brandon Odom was celebrating more than anybody, taking wins in the Viper Series Timber 100 and the Modified feature.

Justin South once again led the way in qualifying, turning the 4/10 mile oval in 15.241 seconds. Inversion put South fourth on the grid with Ryan Redmon on the pole and Odom outside. Odom grabbed the early lead, but South quickly came to the front to take the lead on lap six. Three laps later, Hunter Robbins moved past Odom to take second. Odom settled into third and the field got some laps on the board. South remained out front, ahead of Robbins, Odom, Redmon, and Korey Ruble. On lap 45, Robbins got inside of South to grab the lead. At the halfway point, Robbins led South, Odom, Redmon, and Korey Ruble.

The first caution of the event came on lap 53 when Kevin Herbert spun in turn one. On the restart, Redmon missed a shift, allowing Ruble and Tony Clark to scoot by. Over the next few laps, Robbins stretched his lead to six car lengths over his competition. Odom moved past South on lap 64 to move into second, but remained five or six car lengths behind the leader.

That lead was erased with a lap 77 caution. When racing resumed, Robbins pulled away from Odom by a couple of car lengths. Behind them, Clark and Redmon were staging a battle for fifth. As the race headed into the final 15 laps, Odom began his charge, cutting into Robbins’ lead each lap.

On lap 94, Odom made his move, getting inside of Robbins to take the lead. Odom led the final seven laps to take the win. Robbins crossed the line less than a second behind Odom. South was third, followed by Ruble. The battle for fifth came down to the final few feet.

While fighting hard for the position, Clark and Redmon got together coming out of turn four headed to the checkers. Redmon beat a spinning Clark to the line to take the spot.

In the Modified feature, Odom took the lead with four laps to go to take the win. Kip Whitehead grabbed the lead at the green and led the first 21 laps. Odom started sixth and came through the field easily, moving into second on lap seven. The front three cars, Whitehead, Odom, and Lance Blacker, pulled away from the field, but stayed glued together. Whitehead was able to hold Odom off for several laps, but on lap 22, Odom moved inside of Whitehead entering turn three to take the lead. Whitehead was able to stay on Odom’s bumper, but couldn’t regain the lead. Blacker was on Whitehead’s bumper as they took the checkers. Mario Lupi was fourth and Terry Malone fifth.

In the Street Stock Feature, Chad Roberts grabbed the lead on lap 19 and went on to win. Gary Davis grabbed the early lead from the pole. Davis built a commanding lead over the field while Roberts was making his way through the pack. Roberts moved into second on lap 15, but Davis was enjoying an eight car length lead. That lead was erased two laps later when the yellow flag flew. It took Roberts two laps to move around Davis for the lead. Roberts had to survive a lap 24 restart, but pulled away from Davis to take the win. Billy Maxie was third, followed by Cody McCawley and Chris Salter.

Charles Gardner and David Daniels put on a great show for the large crowd in the Roadrunner Feature. Daniels was able to take the win, but not without great pressure from Gardner. Gardner grabbed the lead from the pole position and led the first 13 laps. Daniels started eighth, but moved into second on lap four and the battle was on. The two separated themselves from the field, but not each other.

They battled back and forth the remainder of the race. Daniels got inside of Gardner heading into turn three on lap 14 to grab the lead, but Gardner didn’t give up the fight. Daniels was able to hold Gardner off to take the win. Tony Tidwell was third, followed by Devin Allen and Ricky Strickland.

In the Coyote feature, Lee Rogers and Jonathan Johnson battled for the win with Rogers coming out on top this time. Danny Thompson grabbed the early lead and led the first 11 laps. Rogers and Johnson came from the ninth and tenth starting spots and moved through the field together. Rogers got past Thompson on lap 12 with Johnson following him. Johnson was able to get past Rogers on lap 22, but Rogers battled back to regain the lead two laps later. Rogers led the final two laps to grab the winner’s trophy. Thompson finished third, with Brain Missildine fourth and Ralph Sanders fifth.

Jack Whittle took the lead on lap 13 and went on to win another CupLite feature. Jason Fowler le the first 12 laps before Whittle took over. Mack Byrd finished second with Fowler third. Lance Blacker and Carroll Williams rounded out the top five.

Eddy Hinson led all 15 laps to win the Mini Sportsman feature. Dale McLendon was second, followed by Timothy Chandler, Paul Gay, and Donnie Howell.

Rob McClendon ran away from the field to score the Motorcycle feature win. John Cohorn was second, Cameron Joyce third, Davo Majzun fourth, and Chris Glaze fifth.
