Grantville’s Austin Horton held off numerous challenges from Roopville’s Clifton Moran to win Saturday night’s Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock feature at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA.
The ‘Grantville Grenade’ brought the fans to their feet as he crossed the line just a few feet in front of Clifton ‘Hoghead’ Moran to upset the winner of the forty-five features over the two plus seasons of competition at the 3/8ths mile speed plant.
“We beat the guy we wanted to beat tonight,” said the excited 17-year-old Horton. “I have to thank my dad, sponsors and everybody cheering us on tonight. This is great.”
Joining Horton in victory lane was LaGrange’s Tod Darda in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Alabama’s Roger Arnett in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Newnan’s Brandon Bright in the Mini Stocks, Peachtree City’s Randy Cornwell in the Bombers and Robbie Scadron of Sharpsburg in the Modified Mini division.
Horton started his push for the checkered flag by getting out front early and running the middle groove. Moran chased him down running his preferred inside line along the interior concrete. The two battled through a few caution flags including a lap six crash involving Jeff Bowen of Carrollton. Bowen had just passed Alabama’s Jamie Land when he spun in turn four bounced of Land and collected Franklin’s Ben Steele and Gary Brand.
On the restarts, Moran would get even with Horton only to have the young gun slam the door shut with the top side momentum. Moran touched Horton only once as the duo charged around trying to gain the number one spot. As the two raced through the final turns, the crowd rose to their feet to see the young man from Grantville hold off the dominant Moran to win his first of the 2013 season. Jamie Land came across the finish line in third ahead of Gary Brand and Ben Steele.
Alabama’s Roger Arnett came into the night with a one point lead in the Newnan Bonding B Cadet season standings. Arnett bypassed Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland the week before to take over the top spot in the points. The two would start side by side after an early race caution for Newnan’s Corey Payton.
Arnett held back all the challenges from Kirkland for his first career victory at Senoia Raceway while Hunter Worley of Alvaton battled the entire race with Stockbridge’s Billy ‘The Kid’ Stevenson and Alabama’s Brandon Pjninenberg. The finishing order would be Arnett, Kirkland, Worley, Stevenson and Fayetteville’s Jason Miller.
Two drivers returned to the Senoia Raceway victory lane as Newnan’s Brandon Bright collected the laurels in the Mini Stock division and LaGrange’s Tod Darda won the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Model feature.
Robbie Scadron won his first career feature at Senoia Raceway by besting the Modified Mini class. Scadron out hustled Alabama’s John Capps III and Newnan’s 14-year-old Trey Wood for the top honors.
Action returns to Senoia Raceway on Saturday, June 8, as the speedway hosts the annual Mini Stock Mania featuring a special race for the four cylinder cars. All other divisions will also compete including the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Bombers and Modified Minis.
