Justin Sorrow made the pass for the lead with just a handfull of laps remaining in Friday night’s Late Model feature at Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, SC, and motored away to score the victory.
The feature opened with the top four running side-by-side, each driver looking or position as the main event of the night got underway. Kenneth Headen, who was looking for his second win in as many races, came away with the lead, with Eric Stokes settling into second, and Austin Aker in third.
Meanwhile, Sorrow was on the move, as he charged around R.A. Brown for fourth on lap five. As Headen moved away from the pack, a five car battle began to shape up for the second position, with the combatants running nose-to-tail for several laps.
The first caution of the night flew on lap 15 when Zeke Whitman had issues in turn one. On the restart, Aker took a run at the lead, but Headen was able to hold him off. Their battle drew the rest of the field close, as a six car battle for the lead began to shape up. Sorrow would work his way to second, and began stalking the leader.
While Sorrow and Headen faced off for the top spot, veteran racer Ralph Carnes was working to make up lost ground. Carnes was late in arriving to the track due to attending a local graduation ceremony.
With five laps to go, Sorrow worked on Headen’s back bumper, and found the daylight he was looking for to challenge for the lead. He made the pass off the second turn, and drove away for the victory. Headen held on for second, with Carnes in third, Brown in fourth, and Aker in fifth.
In other action, Austin Northcutt translated a strong run in the heat race into a strong run in the feature. Northcutt moved to the top spot early, with Casey Tucker and Will Ragsdale giving chase. Northcutt would move away for the victory in a caution free feature. Ragsdale finished in second, with Tucker in third, Robert Marshall in fourth, and Kelsey Roberts in fifth.
The Mini-Stock feature saw three wide action early on, with Brandon Segars claiming the early lead. David Darnell would settle into second, with Chad Campbell in third. The first caution of the event flew on lap four when Ryan Howard had an issue in turn four. Back under green, contact between Segars and Darnell on lap 18 sent Segars around off turn four. Both drivers were sent to the rear of the field, moving Campbell to the lead. He would stay there the rest of the way to score the victory. B.J. Thrasher finishes in second, with Segars and Darnell recovering for third and fourth, respectively. Ben Kay finished in fifth.
Greg Darnell and Shawn Campbell did battle early on for the top spot in the Evergreen Renegades feature, with Campbell finally taking the top spot. On lap three, Darnell hooked Campbell off turn four, sending Campbell around. Both cars are sent the rear of the field by race officials, moving Robin Darnell to the lead. Greg Darnell and Campbell charged their way through the pack, but both saw their nights come to an end on lap 11 in different incidents. As the duo raced side-by-side into turn one, Greg Darnell suddenly slowed on the outside. Then Campbell’s engine detonated as he entered turn three, laying fluid down through the third and fourth turns. That led to a lengthy red flag condition to allow for clean up.
Back under green, Robin Darnell moved away for the win, with Blake Gregory in second, Jack Robertson in third, Chris Whitfield in fourth, and Adam Satterfield in fifth.
The wildest and most confusing feature of the night was the Super Renegades, as Ted Somero jumped out to the early lead. It wouldn’t last long, as Rick Kelly spun out of third place in turn three to bring out the caution. On the restart, Somero returned to the lead, with James Johnson in second and Steve Kelly in third. Kelly would see his night end when a cut tire sent him into the turn one wall.
On the restart, Whitey Suttles powered his way into a three wide race for the lead with Somero and Johnson. Suttles came away with the lea, with Johnson in second and Somero in third. Johnson’s night would come to an end when he cut down a tire, sending him hard into the fourth turn wall.
Suttles would hold the lead on the restart, with Somero in second dogging him over the closing laps. On the final lap, Somero would make contact with Suttles in turns three and four, sending Suttles around. The checkered flag was not waved, but instead the caution flag was waved. It appeared that the race would restart with one lap to go, with Somero and Suttles moved to the rear. Race officials, however, decided the race was over, with Rick Kelly garnering the victory after recovering from his spin on lap three. Suttles was credited with second, with Somero third, David Whitaker in fourth, and Chris Headen in fifth.
The Front Wheel Drive feature was the final event of the night. Brian King moved out to the early lead, but on lap three, Joey Kelly powered into the top spot, and would hold it the rest of the way. C.J. Huitt finished in second, with B.J. Davis in third, King in fourth, and Bradley Williams in fifth.
Anderson Motor Speedway is back in action on Friday night, as the speedway hosts its second Southeast Super Truck event, with 75 laps scheduled to be run, along with action from the Mini-Stocks, US Legends, BM Modifieds, Evergreen Renegades and Front Wheel Drives.
