NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Timothy Peters of Providence, NC held off rookie Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, NC in a five-lap dash to the finish to win Saturday night’s CenturyLink 150 NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division race at South Boston Speedway in South Boston, VA.
Peters’ margin of victory was .410-second.
The win was Peters’ first victory at South Boston Speedway since 2004, the season in which he won the South Boston Speedway NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division championship.
Peters had his hands full in the late stages of the race as two cautions in the final 15 laps kept the field tightly bunched. The pair of cautions allowed McCarty, former NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion Philip Morris, Dustin Storm and Thomas Scott to stay in contention for the win.
With two laps to go, Scott dove to the inside of Morris and Storm to grab third place, and held on to finish third, his best career finish at South Boston Speedway.
Morris, of Ruckersville, VA, finished fourth and Storm, of Huntingtown, MD finished fifth.
Chris Johnson of Mechanicsville, VA, Patrick Coleman of Greensboro, NC, Bugs Hairfield of Chesterfield, VA, Josh Oakley of Rougemont, NC and Bruce Anderson of South Boston, VA rounded out the top ten finishers.
Peters and 2012 NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion Lee Pulliam of Semora, NC waged a hard-fought battle for the top spot early. Pulliam was leading the race when a wheel hub broke, causing his car to spin and crash hard into the outside wall in the second turn on lap 63 of the 150-lap race. Pulliam was credited with a 12th-place finish.
The pair had swapped the lead three times before Pulliam’s crash.
Peters averaged 62.630 mph in winning the race, which was slowed by five caution periods.
Maresca, Bunch split wins in Limited Sportsman Division twin bill
Michael Maresca of Hannawah Falls, NY and Garrett Bunch of Front Royal, VA split wins in the night’s pair of 50-lap NASCAR Limited Sportsman Division races.
For both Maresca and Bunch, the wins were their first of the season.
In the first race, Maresca held off Joey Throckmorton of South Boston, VA in a seven-lap dash to the finish that followed the race’s final caution period, edging Throckmorton by .338-second.
Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, VA, Blake Stallings of Danville, VA and division points leader Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, VA completed the top five finishers in the first race.
In the nightcap, Bunch fended off a charge by Willis in the closing laps, edging Willis by .373-second. Maresca finished third, Stallings finished fourth and Peregoy rounded out the top five finishers.
Autry wins wild Pure Stock Division race
In a race in which just about anything that could happen did, Greg Autry of South Boston, VA, making his first career start, emerged as the winner of the night’s 30-lap Pure Stock Division race.
Autry won the race with his car spinning backwards across the finish line after contact with the car driven by Nathan Crews as they and Austin Milam sped to the checkered flag.
Milam finished second as Autry’s car slammed hard into the inside wall on the frontstretch after taking the checkered flag. Bruce Mayo of Halifax, VA finishing third, Jimmy Wade of Halifax, VA taking fourth place and Vic Ingram of Danville, VA rounding out the top five finishers.
Humblet wins Modified Division race
Jimmy Humblet of Shiloh, NC took the lead from Mike Johnson of Midlothian, VA on lap 17 and drove to victory in the night’s 50-lap Modified Division race.
Tanner Rumburg of Beaverdam, VA, Chris Johnson of Mechanicsville, VA, Hunter Slayton of Richmond, VA and Tanner Aman rounded out the top five finishers.
Racing action will return to South Boston Speedway Saturday night, May 11, when the stars and the Super Late Model cars of the Pro All Stars Series make the first of their three stops at South Boston Speedway this season for the 7 p.m. running of the PASS Super Late Model 150 racing program.
The competitors of the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division will share the spotlight with the PASS series, as they will compete in twin 75-lap races. Rounding out the action is a race for Legends Cars.
