After a disappointing start to his 2013 season in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove is back where he wants to be – in victory lane at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC.

“Last week, we consider the 200-lapper the race we should win. And to have a fifth place car just didn’t settle well with me. So we did everything we could to get it as good as possible this week,” said Myers. Knowing that qualifying would be paramount in the twin 25-lap races on Saturday, Myers concentrated on his time trial performance.

His hard work paid off when he grabbed the pole. Defending champ Tim Brown of Rural Hall was the second fastest qualifier, starting on the outside front row. And behind Myers on the inside second row was younger brother Jason Myers.

As the green flag waved, Myers secured the lead and then set a blistering pace. He and Brown began to approach the rear of the field after a long stretch of green flag laps – which led to a unique set of problems.

“I was just going to sit there and hold my position and block,” said Myers about his game plan as the lapped cars drew closer. “If they were to check up and Tim pins me in, he could shoot by on the outside. Or I could go out and he shoots under me.” But his dilemma was solved when the caution came out and gave him and Brown some breathing room.

Myers stayed ahead of Brown on the restart to take the checkered – his first victory of the season and 51st career win. Tim Brown finished second, with Jason Myers taking third.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Madhouse Scramble sent Kevin Neal of Walkertown to the pole with Ronnie Clifton of Walkertown starting in second. Clifton shot out into an early lead and was looking forward to potentially taking his first Modified victory at the Stadium.

But as Chris Fleming of Mount Airy pressured Clifton for the lead, the two collided and slammed the guard rail.

“We had a good car, and we were leading. But the guy behind me didn’t get off me and drove us both into the wall,” said Clifton.

Randy Butner of Pfafftown was able to capitalize on the situation and claim the lead.

“The leaders – each one of them wants to win the race. They tangled up in front of me, and we were able to get by them,” said Butner. “I just drove through the hole and that got us going for the win – and then we were able to hold out from there.”

The victory in the second 25-lapper was claimed by Butner, with Kevin Neal of Walkertown finishing in second.

Burt Myers damaged both his front tires as he raced with Kevin Powell of Winston-Salem for position during the second race. A quick pit stop had Myers back out in racing shape, and he was able to climb his way through the field to grab ninth.

In the Classic Muscle Sportsman Series, Cale Gale of Mobile, AL – who has competed in the NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series – claimed his first ever checkered at Bowman Gray Stadium.

“I’ve been to a lot of race tracks in my life, and no other place compares to this place,” said Gale.

Gale climbed from 8th up to win. Zack Clifton of Walkertown finished in second.

In the second Sportsman 20-lapper, Derek Stoltz of Walkertown notched another victory, slipping by Barry Edwards of Pinnacle. Edwards finished in second.

Doug Wall of Pfafftown brought home the win in the 20-lap race for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, managing to stay in front of John McNeal of Winston-Salem.

In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville and Jason Keaton of Yadkinville split victories in twin 15-lap events.

Action returns to Bowman Gray Stadium on May 11, with a 100-lap Modified feature, along with racing in the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock divisions. Visit bowmangrayracing.com for more info.
