After being off for a couple of weeks, Kingsport Speedway in Kingsport, TN roared back to life Friday for Whelen Night at the Races in the Model City.
Adam Long of Pounding Mill, VA, powered into the lead at start of the 60-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series “Dalton Direct Carpets” Late Model Stock feature and flexed his muscle the entire distance to easily capture his second victory of the season at “The Concrete Jungle.”
Lee Tissot of Asheville, NC, started the evening off by lowering the Late Model Stock track qualifying record at the .375-mile banked concrete oval. Back on April 5, 17-year-old Hayden Woods had lowered the existing mark to 15.031. But Tissot became the first driver to drop into the 14s, running a quick-lap of 14.959 seconds.
With the top-five from qualifying inverted for the main event, Chad Finchum started from the pole position with Long alongside on the front row. The running order completing the opening lap found Long leading Finchum, Daniel Pope II, Woods and Tissot.
Long immediately began to separate himself from his closest challengers, while Pope was pressuring Finchum for the second spot. Pope got under Finchum for the position on lap eight racing off turn two. Just one circuit later the event’s first caution waved when Ronnie McCarty and Blake Jones got together exiting the fourth turn and were relegated to the rear of the field for the restart. While running in fourth during the caution period, Woods had to relinquish the position and drop onto pit road for attention from his crew for an overheating issue and had to restart from the back.
Long and Pope lined up beside one another on the front row for the double-file restart on lap nine. But with the field tightly bunched together, it appeared a competitor missed a shift near the front of the field which in turn led to a chain reaction situation with cars making front bumper to rear bumper contact. Austin Peters saw his night end with a badly smashed front-end and busted radiator, while Joey Trent and Erika Schmidt got hooked up and spun between turns one and two. Several cars sustained wrinkled body damage.
With track rules calling for a single-file restart if the first attempt following caution on the double-file restart fails to produce a completed green lap, Long led the field back up to speed from the point. Having a clear track ahead, the 28-year-old Long once again began to pull away from Pope and Finchum.
With the race running clean-and-green, by the midway point in the 60-lapper Long held a half-straightaway advantage over Pope and Finchum. Just outside of the top five, on lap 41 Kres VanDyke got around Paul Nogradi Jr. for sixth place.
After starting from the 16th spot due to ignition issues during qualifying, Zeke Shell was up on the wheel hustling his ride to past Anthony Anders on lap 43 racing off the fourth turn to take over the eighth position. Shell got around Nogradi for the seventh spot on lap 51 as they raced off the second corner.
Holding a comfortable lead over Pope and Finchum, the last thing Long wanted to see was a late-race caution. But it happened when Tyler Goodwin got into rear of McCarty entering the first turn on lap 54 to spin McCarty.
Long pulled back ahead racing off turn two on the restart and went on to record his second win, with Pope, Finchum, Tissot and Ryan Stiltner rounding out the top five.
Completing the top-10 finishers were VanDyke, Shell, Jones (who battled his way back from the early race incident with McCarty), Nogradi and Woods. Danny O’Quinn Jr., the 2006 NASCAR Nationwide Series Rookie-of-the-Year, made his first start of the season at “The Concrete Jungle,” and ran as high as ninth before finishing in 12th.
Jared Broadbent of Bakersville, NC, had knocked on the door for his first Street Stock feature win on three occasions this season with one runner-up finish and two third-place runs. But starting from the pole position, Broadbent jumped into the lead and never looked back en route to finally earning a trip to victory lane.
With a strong field of 15 Street Stocks present and battles for position taking place all back through the field during the 30-lap event, Broadbent had to get up on the wheel and fend off several challenges for the lead from John Harrell. But each time Broadbent held his ground and slammed the door not allowing Harrell to overtake him.
Following a caution on lap 21 when Steve Sims slowed at end of the front straightaway with right-front suspension problems, Broadbent went on to win over Harrell, Chris Tunnell, Royce Peters and Rob Austin.
Derek Penley grabbed lead at start of 25-lap Pure 4 feature over David Trent and Dylan Bates. But Jason Ketron, from Kingsport, was on the move quickly. He got around Trent for second on lap three and closed to Penley’s rear bumper to challenge for the lead just one lap later.
Jason’s father, John Ketron, along with brother Billy Ketron, joined in the mix to make it a six-car battle. That spelled disaster on lap seven when John dropped to the inside of Penley between turns three and four, with Bates on the outside making it three-wide. The trio tangled and wrecked on the front straightaway to bring the caution out.
Back under green flag racing conditions the 17-year-old Jason Ketron, a Sullivan North High School junior and the defending Pure 4 track champion, wheeled to his fourth victory of the season over Billy Ketron, Jimmy Hillard, Trent and John Ketron, who battled his way back for a top-five finish.
Billy Taylor of Kingsport recorded his second Rookie Pure 4 victory over Brandon Sutherland, Mook Jeter, Chris Steadman and Bruce Crumbley.
Jacob Owens of Bean Station, current Legends division point leader, aided his cause by winning his third feature on the season. He rolled to victory over Derek Lanke, Trey Lane, Hubert Whitehead and Tony Wiggins.
