Reigning NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion Lee Pulliam won Saturday night’s Mobil 1 Presents NASCAR Whelen Late Model 150 at South Boston Speedway in South Boston, VA to capture his fifth win in seven starts this season at the .4-mile oval.

Pulliam, from Semora, NC, drove away from the field after the race’s final restart with 12 laps to go, edging runner-up Dustin Storm of Huntingtown, MD by 1.816 second to record his eighth victory overall this season.

Austin Thaxton of Cluster Springs, VA finished third with rookie Bobby McCarty of Summerfield, NC and Josh Oakley of Rougemont, NC rounding out the top five finishers.

Pulliam and 2011 NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion, Philip Morris of Ruckersville, VA, waged a tough battle throughout the race. That battle ended when Morris’ car and a lapped car driven by Quin Houff of Mount Sidney, VA made contact and Morris’ car slammed hard into the wall in the first turn on lap 134.

That crash brought out the race’s final caution flag. The race was subsequently put under the red flag and stopped to allow track safety crews ample time to clean up fluids and debris from the mishap.

When racing resumed, Storm made a run at Pulliam for the lead, but Pulliam was able to clear Storm after a couple of laps and pull away for the win.

Pulliam averaged 70.095 mph in the race that took 51 minutes and 21 seconds to complete.

Willis Takes Limited Sportsman Division Win

Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, VA rallied from his eighth-place starting position to take the lead from Blake Stallings of Danville, VA on lap 38 and sped to victory in the night’s 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.

The win was Willis’ third in four starts at South Boston Speedway this season.

Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, VA finished second, 2.056 seconds behind Willis, with Stallings finishing third and Garrett Bunch of Front Royal, VA and Mark Simpson of Mosely, VA rounding out the top five finishers.

Daniel Crews Wins Pure Stock Division Race

Daniel Crews of Long Island, VA took the lead when race leader Nathan Crews encountered problems with his car and won the caution-plagued 30-lap Budweiser Pure Stock Division race, which was shortened to 23 laps.

Crews edged Joe Allred III of Scottsburg, VA by .374-second in a five-lap dash to the finish that followed the race’s final caution period.

Stuart Crews of Long Island, VA, Randy Hupp of Halifax, VA and Nathan Crews of Long Island, VA rounded out the top five finishers.

Due to the large number of caution flags for mishaps, the race, despite being cut short, took just over 42 minutes to complete.

Johnson, Rumburg Split Modified Twin Bill

Chris Johnson of Mechanicsville, VA and Tanner Rumburg of Beaverdam, VA split the night’s twin 30-lap Modified Division races, with Johnson winning the first race and Rumburg taking the victory in the nightcap.

With the pair splitting wins in the twin bill, there are now three different winners in as many races in the division this season at South Boston Speedway.

Jimmy Humblett of Shiloh, NC finished second behind Johnson in the first race with last year’s division champion, Hunter Slayton of Richmond, VA, finishing third.

In the nightcap, Jeff Woods of Vinton, VA finished second with Mike Johnson of Midlothian, VA rounding out the top three finishers.

South Boston Speedway will be idle next week, but NASCAR racing action will return to the .4-mile oval on Saturday night, May 4, when the track hosts the 7 pm running of the CenturyLink NASCAR Whelen Late Model 150 racing program.
