Russ Ogletree ran the top of the track all night running away with the 2013 Spring Fling 40 for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA.
Ogletree qualified second and started on the outside pole in front of a packed house. He was challenged for the first few laps by Tod Darda, but slammed the door shut and cruised the $1500 pay day.
Joining the Alabama hot shoe in victory lane on Saturday night were Grantville’s Blake Griffin in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Newnan’s Jay Conner in the Bombers, Carrollton’s Dustin Smith in the Modified Mini, Barnesville’s Gary Parker in the Mini Stocks and Clifton Moran of Roopville in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks.
“The changes they made to the track will make for some really good racing,” said Ogletree after his flag to flag victory. “They will get the middle and bottom smoothed out and this will be a very racey track. It will be a great season at Senoia.”
Drivers darted around and through holes that developed in each of the turns throughout the night. The rough surface created some tense moments in the Spring Fling 40 for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models.
On lap 16, Thomaston veteran Shane Fulcher went high in turn one and slid hard into the outside concrete. Fulcher was not hurt, but his Turkey Creek Snacks Ford was badly damaged.
When the checkers flew over the field, Ogletree notched the win followed by LaGrange’s Tod Darda, Jenkinsburg’s Trey White third and Hamilton’s Thomas Lewis in fourth. Laddie Fulcher of Thomaston (father of Shane Fulcher) rounded out the first five finishers.
“We added new clay this off season and we just have not had the best weather to get the clay to blend with the existing clay,” said promoter Tim Moses in regards to the rough track on Saturday night. “We will be working twice as hard this week to make it right.”
Newnan’s Corey Payton took charge of the Newnan Bonding B Cadet feature at the drop of the green flag. The high school student led the race until lap six when he spun down across the track in turn two narrowly escaping collisions with hard charging competitors.
Blake Griffin inherited the lead and then ran off from the field leaving the racing for other positions. Alabama’s Kelly Leonard and Roger Arnett ran second and third while Brook’s Jayce Southwell and Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland battled for the fourth place spot.
In the end, Griffin posted his first win since 2011 ahead of Leonard, Arnett, Kirkland and Newnan’s Johnny Stinchcomb.
“It’s going to be a better year,” said Griffin in victory lane. “New sponsors, new season. What a way to start it. The car was great.”
It may have seemed like déjà vu’ for the drivers and fans while watching the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock feature unfold. Griffin’s Mike Archer was the race’s first leader, but Newnan’s Marcus Caswell quickly attached himself to the rear bumper of his car. Not long after, two-time defending Hobby Stock champion Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran of Roopville made it a three car battle. Archer, Caswell and Moran ran three wide at times as they fought for position on the track before Archer cut a tire and had to drop to the pits.
Caswell did a great job holding off the forty-one time feature winner Moran for the first half of the race, but Caswell’s mount began to push in the corners and it was only a matter of time before Moran would scoot past and snare the number one spot.
Moran won the race ahead of Caswell and the ‘Grantville Grenade’ Austin Horton. The seventeen-year-old Horton debuted a new car for the 2013 campaign charging through the field to gain the third place spot.
2011 Mini Stock champion, Gary Parker, returned to form on Saturday night as he led the feature race wire to wire. Parker was challenged by Rockmart’s Ross Baines and Newnan’s Bobby ‘Wild Child’ Arnold throughout the 15-lap main for the four cylinder stock cars. Baines would break suspension parts on lap 11 allowing Parker to cruise to the win ahead of Arnold, Hogansville’s Tim Collier, Griffin’s Bo Chambers and Douglasville’s Randy Brady.
Dustin Smith used the new preferred high line around the 3/8ths mile bullring to pick up his first career win at Senoia Raceway. Smith worked the high side while Villa Rica’s Todd Brewster ran the low side in the Modified Mini main event. Newnan’s Roy Kirkover was able to move into the number one spot when Smith and Brewster touched in turn four of lap 12. Kirkover and Brewster than touched in the same turn a lap later, resulting in Brewster spinning.
Smith held on over the final laps with Kirkover coming in second. Brewster fought back to finish in third ahead of Newnan’s Michael Spencer and Roopville’s Chad Cleveland.
Newnan’s Jay Conner came from near the back of the pack to win the Bomber feature. Conner passed Newnan’s Michael Nelms on lap nine, bounced off the wall once in turn three and then piloted his car to the finish line ahead of all others. Nelms finished in second, but was disqualified for being light at the scales. Alabama’s Chris Arnett moved up a spot with Riverdale’s Mike Ray rounding out the top three. Newnan’s Kevin Evans and Carrollton’s Alton Bowen were fourth and fifth.
Senoia Raceway opens the 2013 points season this Saturday, April 13. The championship charge will run through September 21 in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Bombers and Modified Minis.
