The 50th anniversary season of Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, SC got off to fast start Friday night.  First, Ralph Carnes led three drivers in breaking the track record in Late Model qualifying, turning in a 14.791 lap.

Then Carnes overcame a near spin early in the going to score the victory in the 50-lap feature.

“Feels great, man,” said Carnes in victory lane.  “I didn’t expect this, but the car has been fast all day.  This felt awesome.”

Carnes would roll off sixth in the feature after an invert put Eric Stokes on the pole position.

The opening lap would provide some of the most exciting late model racing seen so far this season in the southeast, as the top five fought for position, with Stokes and Austin Aker setting the early pace.

Disaster almost struck among the leaders on lap four, as one car checked up, both Randy Porter and Carnes found themselves sideways in turn two, fighting for control.  Both drivers were able to gather up their mounts, and continued on.

“When they kind of stacked up in front of me I got hit from behind,” said Carnes.  “I don’t know what happened, but I was fortunate to get to gather it back up, and get back to the front.”

On lap seven, Neil Meredith would slip by Stokes to take the top spot.  But just six laps later, it was Porter who would overhaul Meredith to take the lead, with Carnes in hot pursuit, moving into second.

The lead duo would run nose to tail over the next 13 laps, with Carnes looking to the inside time after time, trying to find daylight around Porter.  But the battle would come to an end on lap 36, when something appeared to break in the left front of Porter’s car, sending him around in turn three in a shower of sparks.  He was able to drive back to the pits, but his night was over.

That moved Carnes into the lead, a position he would hold the rest of the way.  Justin Sorrow came across the finish line in second, with Aker in third, Kenneth Headen in fourth, and Meredith in fifth.

“(Porter) was fast,” said Carnes.  “I was there, but it was going to be a heck of a race.  I hate to see him fall out like that.”

In other action, with one lap to go in the BM Modified feature, Austin Northcutt had the lead with two to go, when Shon Gibson slid past for the top spot.  On the final lap, Northcutt made his way under Gibson going into turn three, pulling even off turn four.  At the line, it was Northcutt just nipped Gibson to score the win.  Stanley Thompson finished in third, with Tim Stokes in fourth, and Benny Gillespie in fifth.

In Renegades action, with a $400 bonus on the line, Greg Darnell laid down the fastest lap in qualifying, but would roll off sixth after the invert, with Blake Gregory on the pole.  Darnell was on the charge from the drop of the green, and would take the lead on a lap eight restart.  Darnell went on to score the victory and pick up the $400 bonus.  Blake Gregory came home in second, with Shawn Campbell in third, Tommy Stokes in fourth and Kyle Ballew in fifth.

In the US Legends feature, Jay Coen paced the field for the first 17 laps.  With three to go, Jacob Schneider would power past Coen on a restart, and would hold on to the top spot to score his first career Legends victory.  Coen finished second, with Rex Brown in third, Randy Gunton in fourth, and Madeline Crane in fifth.

Chad Campbell led early in the Mini-Stock feature, with Brandon Segars and Ben Kay giving chase.  Meanwhile, David Darnell was on the charge from the back of the pack after a weight violation negated his heat race finish.  Darnell had moved to second by the sixth lap, but almost saw his night go away as he fought for the lead.  As he and Campbell tried to battle around lap car, Darnell’s car almost went around.  He was able to gather it up and continue on.

Campbell and Darnell would battle side-by-side for a lap and a half after a lap 13 restart before Darnell took the lead.  Darnell would go on to pick up the win, with Campbell in second.  Brandon Segars, Ben Kay, and Donnie Segars rounded out the top five.

In the Front Wheel Drive feature, Joey Kelly led every lap en route to the victory, but had to hold off a hard charge by Chris Harvell to score the win.  Tommy Davis came home third, with C.J. Huitt in fourth, and Bradley Williams in fifth.

Anderson Motor Speedway returns to action on Friday, April 6, with $500 to the line to win for the Front Wheel Drive division.  Also on the card are the Mini-Stocks, US Legends, Evergreen Renegades, Super Renegades, and BM Modifieds.  For more information, visit andersonmotorspeedway.com.
