Darrell Lanigan and Brett Hearn won two thrillers Saturday night to close out the 2013 UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment in front of a huge crowd at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, FL.
Lanigan, the defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion, out dueled Tim McCreadie and Josh Richards in the 50-lapper to win for the first time at Volusia Speedway Park. Richards tried to close the gap down the stretch but Lanigan was too strong, winning by .990.
“I changed my line around a bunch down in three and four to try and get good,” said Lanigan, of Union, KY. “For the last five laps I found a pretty good line right through the middle there. My car was awesome there and we were able to hold on. I got to thank my crew. They worked hard all week to put this car back together (after a Tuesday-night crash). We put it on the jig to straighten it out and it was awesome tonight.”
Richards’ runner-up finish was good enough to earn the overall Dirt Late Model event championship.
McCreadie was third with Shane Clanton and Tim Fuller completing the top five.
In Super DIRTcar Series action, Hearn was dominating the 50-lap finale before blowing a right rear with 15 laps to go and turning over the lead to Mario Clair. Hearn’s crew quickly changed the tire and he charged back through the 28-car field. Hearn moved to second with two to go and slid past Clair in turns 1 and 2 after taking the white flag. Hearn then held off Clair to the finish for his 21st victory at Volusia.
“I may have clipped a lapped car when I tried to split these guys off of turn four,” said Hearn, a seven-time Super DIRTcar Series champion from Sussex, NJ. “I’m sure we bent a wheel or something. Our car got tighter and tighter but we were still going through lapped cars like they were stopped. When I got that flat tire, we didn’t have the same compound to put back on the car. I could tell by the dejected look on the crew that they weren’t ready to change that tire with the same compound so I just went out there to do the best I could do.”
Justin Haers was impressive in finishing third with Stewart Friesen and Matt Sheppard rounding out the top five.
Danny Johnson finished sixth and earned the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified Florida Tour championship.
