Silk Victorious In Richie Evans Memorial At New Smyrna

Ron Silk and Chuck Hossfeld battled over the closing laps of the Richie Evans Memorial 100 for the Tour-Type Modified division at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL Friday night.

Hossfeld drove hard into the final corners on the last lap, but it was Silk who edged out the final run to the checkered flag to score the victory 28th annual running of the event during n night seven of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.

Woody Pitkat lead early from the pole, and was looking for his third division victory of the World Series.  Andy Suess would move into second, while Hossfeld and Silk worked their way forward.  By lap 17, both had overtaken Seuss, and worked to hunt down the leader.

Hossfeld would take several shots at the lead, but Pitkat used a high line to hold the top spot.

A two car tangle would bring out the caution on lap 28.  Pitkat would use the high line again on the restart to retain the lead on the restart.  Hossfeld would continue to give chase, and on lap 53, he powered his way around Pitkat and into the lead.

As the laps wound down, Silk worked to close the distance and get into the fight for the lead.  A caution on lap 65 sent the leaders to the pits.  Silk made an abrupt move to pit and was sent to the back of the field by race officials.

After the pit stops, Burt Myers found himself in the lead, with Pitkat moving quickly to second.  Pitkat had to try several times to get past Myers for the lead, but couldn’t make the move stick until lap 73.  Meanwhile, Silk, charging from his penalty, powered through the field and moved to second by lap 78, while Hossfeld lurked in third.

After trying several times, Silk finally got his car out front on lap 85.  Hossfeld would make his way around Pitkat for second one lap later, setting up the run to the finish.

Hossfeld would hang on for second, with Pitkat in third, Burt Myers in fourth, and Jimmy Zacharias in fifth.

In other action, Kyle Benjamin pulled into the lead on lap 28 of the 35-lap Super Late Model feature, and went on to score his fourth straight victory of the World Series.  Bubba Pollard finished second, with Dylan Kwasnewski in third, Chase Elliott in fourth, and Travis Cope in fifth.

Brad May picked up his second victory of the week, as he outdistanced Dawsonville, GA’s Spencer Davis in the Pro Late Model feature.  Rich Clouser came home in third, with Alex Guennette in fourth, and Brandon Johnson in fifth.

In the Pro-Truck feature, Michael Burns topped the field for the win.  Jessica Murphy, Scotty Reeves, Michael Lira, and Nick Hernandez rounded out the top five.
