Ken Schrader edged Austin Dillon by a tooth at the checkered flag Monday night at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, FL to win the Gator Championship at the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment.
Schrader started 10th and wasted no time moving through the DIRTcar UMP Modified field in the 30-lap feature, slicing his way to the front past Kenny Wallace then Justin Allgaier, taking the lead on lap 16 and finally holding off Dillon at the checkered flag in a thriller.
“Austin was right there at the end,” said Schrader, a veteran NASCAR star who has won in multiple forms of motorsports. “I started kind of babying it the last three or four laps because I didn’t want pop the front end on the cushion and he said his motor went sour and let him run the bottom a little better. We’ll take it. I was pretty concerned when we drew a 10 for the start with the quality of cars out there.”
Dillon started 14th and followed Schrader through the field, but wasn’t able to gain enough of a surge coming off the final corner to get Schrader at the line.
“If I had to lose to anybody it would be Kenny Schrader,” Dillon said. “He’s one of my heroes out here. It was a fun race, hopefully next year we’ll come back and get that gator.”
DIRTcar Late Models also rolled into Volusia on Monday night, and like Schrader, Josh Richards started 10th and powered to victory in a stacked field of dirt late model stars, including Scott Bloomquist. Richards worked the high side on the half-mile oval before sweeping into the lead on lap 18 of the 30-lap feature and holding off Steve Francis to win at Volusia for the first time since 2010.
On Tuesday, DIRTcar UMP Modifieds conclude their portion of the two week event with Triple 20 features and will be joined by the second night of DIRTcar Late Model action. Gates open at 5 pm with warm-ups at 6 pm and racing at 7:30 pm.
