There’s nothing like the first win of a driver’s career. Just ask Cody Coughlin, who scored his first career Late Model victory Friday night in the Pro Late Model feature at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL on the opening night of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
Coughlin moved to the top three in the closing laps, then picked up the lead from Brandon Johnson with a hand full of laps to go. Coughlin would hold his nearest competitor to a car length to flash under the checkered flag first.
Zach Germain jumped out to the early lead, with Spencer Davis looking to challenge. Following a lap 2 caution, Davis would rim-ride up high to the lead on the restart. Germain would spin on the next lap, bringing out the second caution on the night.
On the restart, Davis would hold off a challenge from Brad May for the top spot. On lap 12, May would move into the lead, with Brandon Johnson working on the Dawsonville, GA youngster for second before another caution flew.
May and Johnson would pace the field until lap 27, when the leaders tangled with a lap car, sending all three around. Johnson was able to recover and held the lead, while May’s car went to pit road.
Two more cautions would fly before the race got firmly back underway. When it did, Johnson held the lead, with Earl Paules jumping to second and Cody Coughlin moving to third, while Davis slipped to fourth.
With five laps to go, Coughlin made his way around Paules and Johnson to sweep into the lead. It was a spot he would hold until the end.
Paules was flagged in second, but did not pass post race tech. That moved Johnson to second, with Nathan Russell in third, Davis in fourth, and Steve Laking in fifth.
Sometimes, the race to the checkered flag is not the race for the win. That was the case in the Super Late Model feature.
On the track, Stephen Nasse made his way around Kyle Benjamin with half a laps to go. Benjamin was able to get back under Nasse in three and four, and challenged comign to the checkered flag. Nasse was able to hold on to be flagged the winner, with Benjamin in second.
But the actual finish was decided in post-race tech, as both Nasse and Benjamin were disqualified on weight issues.
That moved Dave Rogers to the win.
On the start of the feature, Nasse jumped out front with Rogers moving to second and Benjamin in third early. The trio would stay at the front through the opening laps, as several cautions flew for incidents. Rogers and Benjamin would put on a spirited battle for second over the closing laps. With three to go, Benjamin would close on Nasse for second, setting up the final lap.
With Rogers moving to the win, Devin McLeod moved to second, with Dylan Kwasniewski in third, Ryan Moore in fourth and Austin Luedtke in fifth.
In other action, Woody Pitkat topped the field to score the victory in the NASCAR Modified feature. Patrick Emerling crossed the finish line in second, with Matt Hirschman in third, Chuck Hossfeld in fourth and Earl Paules in fifth.
John Sarppraicone, Jr. scored the win in the FL-IMCA Modified feature. Jerry Symons, Tank Tucker, Josh Todd and Kurt Jett rounded out the top five.
