Thursday night of the TUSA Hoosier Mod Lite Winternationals at the East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL fell victim to the weather but when the cars returned on Friday night, Jimmy Wills of Felton, DE picked up where he left off on Wednesday night as he captured the 25-lap feature event.

Desoto, IA’s Josh May looked strong at the start of the A Main as Wills worked by Josh Sliter for second. Ross White out of Knoxville, TN was on the move and had just moved into third when the engine let go on his car bringing out the yellow.

May controlled the restart with Wills hanging on to second and former National Champion, Mikey Hay of Somerset, PA moving into the third spot. A multi-car tangle at the back of the field brought out the yellow for the second time on lap three. On the restart Hay mounted a challenge on Wills taking the second spot at the line on lap five but Wills took the spot back in the first turn.

By lap 10, the top five were May, Wills, Hay, Ty Short of Ellendale, DE and Alan Knepper of Somerset, PA The yellow was out for a third time at this point when Tyler Riggs out of Ohio slowed to a stop in the second turn. May hit the throttle first on the restart but may have spun the tires as Wills got the bight and took the lead down the front straight.

The final yellow would fly on lap 16 when Chase Flatt came to a stop. Wills chose the outside on the restart and it worked perfectly as he once again held off May on the restart. Short also got a good restart and took the third spot dropping Hay to fourth.

Wills made no mistakes as he drove to his second win in as many nights in the American Legion Post #2/Pro. May finished in the second spot with Short posting a personal best at East Bay finishing in third. Fourth went to Hay and Alan Knepper rounded out the top five.

“There was a lot of grip on the top out there tonight,” said Wills. “I think he (May) got in the grease a little bit and slipped and that caution helped out a lot.”

In Open Wheel Modified action, fans witnessed a first-time winner who made a late pass of a race-long leader with five laps to go in the 25 lap feature to earn $1,500.

Bart Hartman of Zanesville OH started off the evening with fast time and a new track record of 16.466 that was worth $500 from Brandon Ford, but then waited until feature time to pull into victory lane after passing pole sitter David Reutimann using an outside move on lap 21 to score a margin of victory by 0.281 seconds.

“You could race all around this track tonight,” Hartman told track announcer Chris Stepen. “This Mullins engine and this Outlaw by Shaw chassis hooked up with these Genesis shocks and Hoosier tires, so that I could follow David and put pressure on him from lap 14 on working the inside groove.  But with five laps to go, I thought I would try the outside lane and I made it work.”

Last year, Hartman finished the three day show with a fourth, second and third, but this year he pulled off a win for his owners, 2 Brothers Racing.

Reutimann and last year’s winner Devin Dixon started in the front row followed by Hartman and Roger Crouse in row two then Brad DeYoung, Dale Mathison, Matt Miller, Matt Cooper, Mike Potosky and Bobby Dixon made up the front ten.

Devin Dixon stayed with Reutimann for the first seven laps then Dale Mathison took over second and made a bid for the lead going into turn one on lap 10 and went around giving second back to Dixon.  But by lap 14 Hartman moved by Dixon and all eyes were on the two car battle for the lead.

Dixon held on for third followed by Crouse and Matt Cooper in the top five, then came DeYoung, Shon Flanary, Greg Amick, Bobby Dixon and Joey Galloway in the top ten.

Devin Dixon, David Reutimann, Roger Crouse and Hartman won the heats and the B-Mains went to Austin Sanders and Travis Varnadore.

Action continues tonight at East Bay Raceway Park.  Visit www.eastbayracewaypark.com for more info.
