Kyle Benjamin made a statement about his 2013 season Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
That statement: Watch for the No. 71 this year.
Benjamin dominated the Pete Orr Memorial – Orange Blossom 100, keeping his car out front all night as he scored the victory.
After turning in the fourth fastest time in qualifying, Benjamin moved to the top starting spot on the redraw. Benjamin would jump out to the lead on the start, with Matt Tifft, Stephen Nasse, and David Rogers giving chase.
The first caution of the night flew on lap 16, when Jeff Scofield had an issue that brought him to a halt on the track.
Benjamin would retain the lead over the next 56 laps, staying out of trouble through five caution periods. Meanwhile Rich Clouser would work his way up to second, with Nasse in third, Travis Cope in fourth and David Rogers in fifth.
Clouser had begun to close on Benjamin when Anthony Sergi made hard contact with the front stretch wall. Sergi was uninjured, but his night was over. Race officials would red flag the event to allow for track cleanup.
On the restart, Benjamin would jump out front, with Cope moving around Clouser for second. Back in the pack, the racing stacked up three wide in places as the laps wound down. With seven to go, Clouser and Cope began fighting side-by-side for second. When the checkered flag flew, it was Benjamin scoring the win, with Cope nipping Clouser at the line for second. Nasse finished fourth, with Rogers in fifth.
George Gorham, Jr., Scofield, Spencer Davis, Daniel Keene, Jr., and Matt Tifft rounded out the top ten.
In other action, Derrick Wood won the Sportsman feature victory. Donny Williams finished second, with Ron Gusafson third, Richard Goodrich fourth, and Bobby Mobley in fifth.
Scott Reeves scored the Pro Truck feature win, with Becca Monopoli finishing in second.
In the E-Modified feature, Earl Beckner beat out Sean Monaghan for the win. John Hodge, Bruce Packer, and Phil Luizzo rounded out the top five.
Dave Davis was the winner in the Mini-Stock feature. Ted Vulpius was second, with Jesse Powers third, Levi Hammond fourth, and Wayne Clark in fifth.
Maureen Dahm won the Strictly Stock feature. Dustin Higdon was second, followed by Mike Dahm, Megan Matheny, and Jeff Matheny.
Action returns to New Smyrna Speedway next month, as the speedway plays host to the 47th annual World Series of Stock Car Racing, beginning on Feb. 15 and running through Feb. 23. Visit newsmyrnaspeedway.org for more info.
