After seeing the leaders ahead of him tangle, Stephen Nasse moved to the lead near the halfway point of Saturday night’s Red Eye 100 at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL, and would turn other’s misfortune into his good fortune by streaking to the victory.
Nasse trailed leaders Travis Cope and Rich Clouser when the two made contact, sending Cope hard into the inside wall and Clouser to the rear of the field.
Nasse would only be challenged briefly by Gus Dean in the closing laps as he sped on to win his second career Red Eye 100 victory.
B.J. McLeod and Clouser started the night on the front row, leading the 21 car field to green. Clouser would lead the opening laps, with David Rogers and Brandon Johnson giving chase. Cope and McLeod would settle into fourth and fifth early, with Nasse giving chase in sixth.
The race was red flagged on lap seven when Rogers’ car came to rest in turn one as flames shoot out of the side. Rogers was okay, but the car suffered damage.
Clauser would continue to control the event, while Cope gave chase. Nasse, meanwhile, worked his way to third, trailing the leaders. Cope would close on Clauser approaching the halfway point, setting up the tangle between the two leaders and opening the door for Nasse to sweep into the lead. Nasse would go on from there to score the win.
Dean was flagged in second, with Clouser in third. However, both failed post-race tech due to left side weight issues. That moved Michael Lira to second, with Danny Foster third, Spencer Davis fourth, and Chad Allman in fifth.
Anthony Sergi, Ray Black, Jr., Dusty Cornealius, Anthony Campi, and Travis Cope rounded out the top ten.
In other action, Matthew Wheeler topped the field to win the Open Wheel Modified feature. Matt Bosowski finished second, with Ted Head third, Jim Higginbotham fourth and Mike Dahm in fifth.
Dude Teate scored the victory in the Mini-Stock feature. Mark Broat finished second, followed by Firman Davis in third, Darren Kling in fourth, and Levi Hammond in fifth.
In Super Stock action, Shannon Kelly beat Ernie Tumminello to the checkered flag for the victory. Gino Tumminello came home third, followed by David Gould and Scott Tyler.
Mark Shukwit came across first for the Stictly Stock win. Firman Davis, Ken Josephson, Megan Matheny, and Shane Sutorus rounded out the top five.
