Bridges Races To USCS Thunder Nationals Win At Carolina

Johnny Bridges from Cherryville, North Carolina put his name in the USCS history books by winning his first USCS presented by Goodyear main event of the 2012 season at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, NC on Friday night.

Bridges led the entire distance and reached victory lane first in the 30-lap Carolina Thunder Nationals main event in his familiar #07 Roush-Yates Ford powered J&J Auto Racing sprint car. Bridges had to hold off took the lead on lap one from K&N Filters Pole Position starter and last year’s event Champion, 17 year-old Eric Riggins, Jr. and current National points leader Tim Crawley for the win.

Riggins, Jr. made several pass attempts as the duo raced through lapped traffic but couldn’t best the flying Bridges and had to settle for the runner-up spot. Bridges held off both Riggins and Crawley who both had a last chance at the leader when the caution flag flew re-aligned the field on lap twenty-eight creating a two-lap dash to victory lane. Terry Gray crossed the finish line behind Crawley to finish fourth and Dave Ely rounded out the top five.

Kevin Darling from Dover, Delaware came home in the sixth position. Terry Witherspoon followed in seventh place. Jake McLain finished in the eighth spot.  Lance Moss finished in the ninth position and Clint Weiss rounded out the top ten.

Anthony kicked off the evenings sprint car action by streaking to a win in the Goodyear Speed Dash. Johnny Bridges won the Engler Machine and Tool First Heat. Tim Crawley won the Butlerbuilt Second Heat. Crawley also collected the K&N Filters Podium Award for his third place finish. Eric Riggins, Jr. was awarded the K&N Filters Pole Position after first heat race winner, Johnny Bridges drew a six inversion in the K&N Filters inversion draw.

Terry Witherspoon was rewarded for his hard charging efforts with the Wilwood Hard Charger Award for the driver who advances the most positions in the main event after improving seven positions. The JE Pistons Top Guns Award was earned by Terry Gray who finished fourth. Dave Ely garnered the Keizer Aluminum Wheels Top Five Award and Clint Weiss collected the Diversified Machine/Bulldog Rear Ends Top Ten Award.

In other action, Rick Goss from Charlotte, NC captured his second USCS 600 main event win of the 2012 season on Friday night at Carolina Speedway. Both of his wins came at the track.

Goss, who won the Engler Machine and Tool First Heat race, started outside of the front row after drawing a zero in the K&N Filters Pole Award drawing. He then raced past K&N Filters Pole Position starter Darren Hasty and streaked to nearly a half straightaway at the end of the 15-lap contest at the 4/10 mile clay oval. Hasty followed him to the USCS victory lane in the runner-up position.

Coby Adams, who started fifth, finished in the K&N Filters Podium Award third place. Young gun Mac Bradford followed Adams in fourth place and Justin Lineman made it an all North Carolina top five.

Lineman’s team-mate Matt McCullough led the next group in sixth place. Bobby Zaiontz finished seventh. Mike Magic followed in eighth place. Ron Bishop finished in the ninth position and Sean Hosey rounded out the top ten in the twenty car field.

Goss won the Engler Machine and tool First Heat and Goss got the victory in the Schoenfeld Headers Second Heat. Zaontz kicked of the action with a win in the Hoosier Speed Dash.
