The 48th Annual Alabama 200 Weekend at Montgomery Motor Speedway in Montgomery, AL has made history. Young Mason Massey, of Douglasville, GA took the victory, making him the second youngest winner ever in the history of the storied event.

Local hero Hunter Robbins took the Core Racing Products Pole Award on Saturday evening in qualifying, touring the half-mile in 18.871 seconds. Robbins rolled a “five” for the inversion, putting Bill Bethea III and Anderson Bowen on the front row.

Bowen jumped out the early lead before Robbins took the point. Robbins led a total of 102 laps, but in the end it was Massey who took the victory. Robbins held on for second in front of Bowen, Mike Garvey, and Bethea.

With his second place finish, Robbins clinched the 2012 Show Me the Money Series Championship; his second in a row.

In Saturday night’s preliminary action, the largest field of cars this year arrived to race in the B&K Trucking Super Stock/Truck division. Dawsonville, GA’s Spencer Davis, who was pulling double-duty this weekend, also racing in the Alabama 200, took the initial victory in the 10 car field, but was disqualified in post-race technical inspection. That handed the win to Randy Thompson, driving for Mike Trawick Motorsports in the same car that took victory earlier this year with Regan Baker behind the wheel. Cameron Henderson took second, followed by Chris Wagner in the highest finishing truck, Roger Cain, and Jonathan Goolsby.

The FourStar Freightliner Street Stock 100 was once again a crowd pleaser. Joe Bethea Jr. backed up his Street Stock 100 win from last year, and his 2012 season championship this year, with yet another victory in the FourStar Freightliner Street Stock 100.

Bobby Knox Jr. set fast-time in qualifying, but rolled a “10″ on the giant inversion die, putting Whit Goode and Chris Salter on the front row. Goode led the first lap before Dwayne Wessenberg charged by for the lead. Wessenberg held on to the lead after many challenges from Bethea, who was patiently waiting for the prime opportunity to strike. The top five cars ran nose-to-tail, occasionally bumping and banging battling for positions for nearly the entire race. Finally, with about 20 laps to go, Bethea managed to work his way past Wessenberg. Bethea went on to take the checkers over the 15 car field and the $2000 payday, followed by Daniel Jacks, Randy Thompson, Wessenberg, and Richard Patino.

For the first time in several years, the Cuplites division visited Montgomery Motor Speedway. These low-cost spec cars, powered by snowmobile engines, have been a fixture at South Alabama Speedway for many years. A total of 10 cars made the trip North to Montgomery, and it was Shep Lucas who took the win in the exciting feature over Jason Fowler, Rick Northey, Waylon Spivey, and Karl Williams.

The Mini-Mod division saw plenty of action as well. Roger Wood Jr. led the first 17 laps before Chase Spradlin was able to root him out of the way to take the apparent victory. Spradlin was disqualified in post-race technical inspection, handing the win to MMS newcomer Adam Gunter. Wood finished second, with Nick Martin, Scott Rice, and Frankie Spradlin rounding out the top five. Joel Collier finished 7th, and held on to win the 2012 Mini-Mod championship by just 5 points over Scott Rice.

The Buzz division saw Perry Patino capture his first victory. Patino started from the pole and led every lap to take the win over Joshua Wood, Matthew Robbins, John Musgrove, and Chad Frost. Floyd Brown’s 6th place finish was enough to clinch his second-straight track-championship at MMS.

In the return of the Motorcycles to Montgomery Motor Speedway, Davo Majzun battled with Van Rayburn and Rob McLendon to take his first SMARS victory. McLendon had mechanical woes late in the race and did not finish. Van Rayburn took second, over James Hinckle, Chris Glaze, and Troy Abels.

The Saturday night action concluded with the annual Employees Race. Flagman, John Midkiff, General Manager, Paul Boswell, Pace Car Driver, Don Wilson, and Safety Truck Worker Jason Keller battled it out for 12 laps in borrowed Buzz cars. A small incident in the very first corner with Boswell and Wilson caused slight damage to Wilson’s machine. He came to pit road to check it under green and returned to the Speedway. He caught, battled, and passed Boswell late in the going to apparently take the win, but in post-race review it was determined Wilson had lost a lap in the pits, and Boswell was declared the winner. Midkiff was credited with second, and Wilson with third.

The 48th Annual Alabama 200 Weekend concluded the racing season this year at Montgomery Motor Speedway. The 2013 rules and scheduled will be announced in the coming weeks.
