Mini-Sprints were a big part of the Senoia Summer Nationals at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA over the weekend, as the USCS 600 Sprint Car series did battle, with Bobby Zaiontz and Mike Magic splitting the events Friday and Saturday.
Zaiontz raced from his third place starting position into victory in Friday night’s feature. Early race leader Shane Nelson from Ooltewah, TN followed him home in the runner-up spot after leading the first half of the race. Terry Peters from Charlotte, NC finished in third place. Chris Openshaw from Bessemer, AL, who won both the Hoosier Dash and Engler Machine and Tool First Heat, finished fourth. Matt McCullough from Atlanta, GA rounded out the top five drivers.
The next group was headed by Mike Magic. The only female racer in the field, sixteen year-old Cassie Klenke from Greer, SC followed him in seventh place. Veteran Bob Trapino from Alpharetta, GA finished in eighth place after starting eleventh. Sean Hosey from Clarksville, TN finished ninth. Scott Berkheiser from Powder Springs, GArounded out the top ten finishers.
Openshaw kicked off the evening’s winged mini sprint car action with a win in the 6-lap Hoosier Speed Dash. Openshaw then won the 6-lap Engler Machine and Tool First Heat Race. Zaiontz rolled to victory in the Butlerbuilt Second Heat Race. Trapino passed the most cars in the main event garnered the Keizer Aluminum Wheels Hard Charger Award. Tyler Price from Clarksville, TN, collected the Hoosier Tire Rookie of Race honors.
On Saturday, it was veteran racer, Mike Magic from Winder, GA who blasted to his second USCS 600 Sprint feature win. After leading the heat race qualifying points Magic blasted from the K&N Filters Pole Position into the lead in turn one and never looked back on his way to the victory, leading all 20-laps of the weekend finale.
Bobby Zaiontz from charged from his fifth starting position into the runner-up spot at the end of the contest. Shane Nelson from Ooltewah, TN followed Zaiontz in third place. Terry Peters finished fourth. Chris Openshaw, who won the Schoenfeld Headers Second Heat, rounded out the top five drivers in the caution-free event.
The next group was headed by Sean Hosey in sixth place. Veteran Dwight Pilgram from McDonough, GA followed Hosey in seventh place. Ron Bishop from Savannah, GA placed eighth. Brandon Taylor from Cumming, GA finished ninth. Bob Trapino rounded out the top ten finishers.
